How to recover pdf password?

I have put in some passwords when i made pdf & word files. Some of these files are now not opening. Is there any way I can open these files ?

Bumping this old thread,

I have same issue with my few PDFs. I know the password pattern I have set but can not recollect exact password :banghead:
Is there any good application which is optimized for quad cores ?
 
Yesterday, i was unable to open a password protected pdf file. After some googling, I found a freeware called PDFCrack. http://pdfcrack.sourceforge.net/
Initially, the ran the software with the default settings, it was taking a long time to crack. I saw it was using various length password.
I had some details of the password like it was eight characters long and first 4 characters were my first name. all i wanted was the last four numbers.
so i set the length as 8, provided my first name 4 characters and digits 0 to 9.
PDF crack was able to crack the password in about 5 minutes

If the password is totally unknown, it might take a long time.
