Graphic Cards how to remove 6800 heatsink

those 5 holes are there on standard 6800PCB. Meant for holding the memory sinks.
Pressing on the core can damage the core, lifting it up wont.
As far as damaging the smd components, thats why i told to put a cloth between knief and PCB. And trust me it does need more force that we imagine it will need. I myself was sceared to death while i removed my 6800GT heatsink. It made a cracking sound while it came off. That was the noise of thermal compound bond breaking not the card damage.
And ya do it slowly. it will come loose at certain pressure.
My knief almost bent 3/4 way while removin the HSF off the 6600GT. Thats how much pressure it needs sometimes.

are you sure ;)

I have seen a few high-end cards this year itself which had been, well literally knifed to death.
as long as the knife is not touching any part of the core while applying pressure it is ok. but sometimes the user does gets careless and inserts the knife between the chip (not the core) and the h/s, where those small smd components (jumpers / switches literally) reside. one careless moment and you can imagine what will happen.:hap5:
also sometimes the knife edge goes between the chip and the pcb ......imagine what will happen then .....:D

Funky, you are misunderstanding my cautious attitude.
if you read the last two lines it states
"hence whatever you do i suggest you do it slowly (as suggested by funky) and do not apply too much force in frustration.!!!!!"

All i tried to convey to the poster was to be cautious and not let frustration or excitement get the better of him. i have done many a bad and stupid things myself in frustration.:cool2:

Ahem.... I don't think we are actually helping him with these INSTRUCTIONS about knifing ;) the card etc.....

And it would surely be better if he could also post a pic of the front of the card. It is possible that he missed something.

heh deejay i know what you meant.
I just wanted to feel him little confident doing this and not scaring him more :P

its scary stuff, i know, done this, been there. Just giving dude little self confidence to go aheat with little extra pressure. I should have made a video of me removing the HSF off my gfx card, that would have assured him that it does need considerable force.

P.S. I said butter knief, butter knief, butter knief.
not knief
:P

thanks funy will try the butter knife.

those holes are for the heatsink. But this card does not come with nvidia heatsink so they will not use them. take a look at top pictire of card. you can remove the heatsink cover only after removing the heatsink the cover screws are under the heatsink.

See picture. that screw that you can see is for removing the fan wire and fan. see gap? because of thermal pad between ram and heatsink.

Will 2 hour of running 3dmark 05 do it? will it make hot enough? I will try it

I know you mean by professional help I dont want to break expensive card for this that shit nv5 all this trouble because of nv5. :@ If I know it is so much trouble and difficult I would have never bought this shit nv5. :@ now it is 24 hours that card is out of system for first time.
:bomb:

do tyons of 3dmark05 loops with heavy oced settings...let the ram be superhot :P then the pads will come off easily

SHIT :S it is not working, nothing is working. I will ask my friend to try and remove it maybe I am not doing it right :S

nah not really. You can try alcohol but after that you need to make sure it dried completely and does not get to the legs of capacitors on the baord as it may stay there unnoticed.

this is really bad I might have to give up the nv5 want to fix the nv5 but not that much that I can risk breaking the card. :(

update

I give up :( I cant remove the heatsink. I am using the default heatsink now latter on maybe someone can help me remove it.

.....noob warning.....
why does sandy want to take off the heatsink...is it to fix a better one so that he can OC' it or is there something more to this.....
I want to fix my nv5.
What dioes this mean...
