How to set-up Netgear WRG614 v5 for BSNL b'band ?

Argus

Explorer
I purchased a Netgear WRG614 v5 wifi router today but I am not able to configure it. The details are as follows :

1.) My ISP is BSNL and the internet wire (RJ-11) is plugged to the Huawei 880 modem.

2.) The Netgear WRG614 is connected to the BSNL modem through RJ-45 interface.

3.) The PC has been connected to the router through RJ-45 interface in one of the 4 sockets of the router.

4.) My lan card is set to obtain IP address automatically.

The problem is that when I run the autorun.exe from the CD, the wizard says that there is no net detected. And when I try to access the config settings through TechEnclave or 192.168.1.1, I get a page not found error

What am I missing/doing wrong ....... kindly giude me.

Which connection plan u have ?? Home ?? BSNL supports multiple connection through Business Plans only.

A workaround would be to make ur PC act as a router with 2 lan ports. Plug in the Netgear into the second Lan port.

Its like

BSNL phone |---| BSNL Modem Huawei |----| Ur PC LAN 1 |----| Netgear ( ur PC Lan 2 |----| Rest of ur internal network.

U will have to dial out from ur PC and then ur Netgear will detect Internet connect , provided u keep internet sharing on.

instead of setting it up through the cd. y dont u set it up by opening the router page.

open ie or firefox & type http://192.168.1.1

i think thats the ip. u can check behind the router for the ip. username = admin password = password. i just configured 2 of these routers last month. 1 for me & 1 for pixel.

also as josh said. makes sure that bsnl has allowed u to use the router to share the net. it was blocked for me on exatt as i am single plan user so i am using it as a hub rather than a router to share the net in my whole house via wifi.

@josh - the 2 lan card method doesnt work. i know theoretically it should work & so i tried it but dint work & in the end using it as a hub with just 1 lan card on my pc. have to login from my pc.

@Josh : I use BSNL's Home 900 UL plan.

@stormblast : The router page is not opening .... thats the sole problem. Do I connect the RJ-45 wire coming from the huawei modem to one of the 4 ports of Netgear router ? Presently it is connected to the WAN port.

**** edit**

Have found out how to configure my modem to remain "always-on". Have to go out for an hour, will torubleshoot as soon as I return. Any suggs welcome :)

1st make sure if your connection has router enabled which means if u can login from the router to the net & the router being your main server.

plug your modem wire to the net slot in the netgear. put the blue wire u got in the 1st lan slot on the netgear & the other end of the wire in your lan card. (leave lan card settings to obtain auto).

after this just follow the procedure from the cd n tell me if its working or no.

if its not then remove the net wire n then do obtain ip auto on ur lan card n check if its getting the ip. once it gets the ip u open 192 page n configure.

Err, in ur LAN card setting, make sure the following are selected:

1)Obtain an IP Address Automatically

2)Obtain DNS server address properly.

The router by default act as DHCP server and hence an IP address in the range of 192.168.1.xx will be allocated.

I am using the same way with BSNL Home plan. I got one PC with 2 LAN cards and switch connected to 2nd LAN port. Another 2 comps connected in the switch.

The problem is u can get dynamic IP for the comps connected to the switch through the Internet connection sharing. But the DNS addresses do not come automatically. So u have to enter both the DNS addresses manually in all the machines u want to connect to the switch. Search the net for BSNL DNS addresses or use Tata Indicom Broadband ones. I will post it when i go home tonight.

@argus that means u wont get multiple connections from Huawei router. So follow the workaround i mentioned.

evilution's advise did the trick (Obtain DNS server address properly). Thanks bro.

Now I can access net on my pc. Proceeding to configure the wifi access on lappy. Thanks to all of you fellow bhai-log who took time to help me out :)

Hope my lappy goes live . . . . will keep josh's post in mind and if I encounter any trouble, will post here.

Lappy detected the wifi device. It shows "connected" in lappy but when I shoot my browser, url's are not opening.

I had to use a workaround to get the net running in my lappy. I'm running a proxy sw (CCProxy, shareware, free upto 3 systems) on my desktop PC and in my lappy's browser settings i've specified my desktop pc's IP and port. So now I can take my lappy anywhere in my home and am able to access net on it. But i'd love to be able access net on my pc even when my pc is shut down. Feeling sleepy now, will try more tomorrow ..... suggestions welcome :)

^^ Booted into another partition (XP SP2 Prof) of my lappy and it detected the wireless network. Just gave the 10-digit WEP key and i was connected.

So now I can surf on the lappy no matter my pc is on or not. Just what I wanted. Thanks to helpful TE members.
