How to start with iPhone

My friend sent me an iPhone 3GS from U.S. Now, this is my 1st Apple product & I know nothing on how to use it!

-How to switch on the phone & then how to proceed further with other functions & usage?

-Should I buy an iPhone charger or a USB cable to charge through Laptop & how much the cable cost?

-Then about Unlocking & jailbreaking. I think I will have to get it done, what's the cost?

-Also, I have an Airtel sim(pre-paid), how to slot it in?

-More suggestions on usage are welcome.

The manual in the iPhone box gives basic instructions on getting started.

Please first check if your sim works with the iPhone (it might be Factory Unlocked), if not, jailbreak and unlock.

My piece came without box, solo i.e.

Checked locally, fro unlocking/jailbreaking they charge 400/-

USB charging cable costs 190/-(fake)

Original charger 500/-

The phone is not powering on, I think it needs a charge before starting.

Update: Got unlocked & jail broken. The versions is 4.1 because the store owner said that 4.2 is not stable as yet. Baseband was also changed from 5.15 to 6.15

Also, bought original Apple Data/battery USB cable.

Saw many cases but did not like any, guys if you could suggest some good cases!

Should I get the phone laminated?

Downloaded iTunes but strangly Net would not connect after itunes was installed. Un-installed it & net started working just fine. What could be the issue?

Deleting msgs, contacts is a chore because I was unable to select all/mark for deletion. Have been using the feature in Symbian phones quite conveniently.

Suggest some tips on using the i-phone & a case too.

Sync Via itunes to delete contacts

if you have cydia there is app Called DeleteContacts,one hit and u are gone...lol all data from contacts is lost.

I installed iTunes but just after that my laptop would not connect via internet. Tried troubleshooting/network management but nothing worked. Just as I started un-installing iTunes, net started functioning perfectly.

Any solution for this, how to correctly use iTunes so that net works flawlesly.

Also could iTunes undo the unlock & jailbreak?

Any alternatives for iTunes?
I was unable to delete contacts via iTunes, was not able to find that option.
New to Cydia so do not know how to operate!
