How to stream videos on lan

OK the question might seem very simple at first but there are a few complications...I want to share movie files with friend on the lan since he has got a puny 40GB HDD he does not want to copy files to his hdd rather just double click on my file and play it form my pc.

We tried with windows file sharing the problem is that it says host not reachable or something even though we are abel to ping each other and play cs too.

Both of us are using Windows XP.
Is there some software available.
Is it possible to setup a Youtube for the lan ?
 
nah..no need for VLC etc. Goto folder options and make sure simple folder sharing is enabled. Then share the folder. The comp file should be visible across the LAN then :)
