Stig's Indian Cousin!!!
Galvanizer
I was in Mumbai this weekend and fell in love with a 2 month old Dutch Spaniel - Kooikerhondje - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (this was the exact colour of the coat of fur on his body - I was told he is a spaniel and when I asked what sort of spaniel he was I got a funny look from the petshop owner)

Now I plan to go back within 2 weeks to pick him up. I usually fly down from Ahmedabad to Mumbai and take a train back home.

How do I get my Spaniel back home? If I decide to travel by train, can I keep him with me in the compartment (AC Chair Car/AC 3 Tier Sleeper)? If I decide to fly home - will I be able to keep him with me or does he have to go to the cargo hold?

Do let me know if anyone has transported their puppy before by flight or train and what are the procedures involved?

If by flight you would have to put him in a cage and transported along with with luggage. Not sure if they are given a mild sedative to relax them. I think airlines would let you rent a cage. Of course I remember this with Jet, not sure about the budget carriers.

For train google showed me this

Info from the above website...

Indian Railways allows a passenger to take pet dog along with him in AC First Class or First Class only, provided he/she reserves either a two berth or a four berth compartment exclusively for his/her use, paying the due charges depending upon the type of train.

EDIT - oops.. you beat me to it.

I would not trust the Airlines with a darling like that....!

Take it using IR. Put the little boy in a big hamper type holder and make it comfy with pillows and some light weight quilts. If it is warm and cuddly within the A/C environ it will sleep a lot. They are hardly naughty when so young. Some of my relatives traveled like that with new puppies.

Congratulations by the way.

Excellent!! I shall take him with me from Mumbai by the Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express. Will book him a berth. I have heard dogs get motion sickness. I have a few stray dogs I adore and keep them at home, sometimes I take my strays to the vet by car and some of them feel extremely uncomfortable. I am worried about the puppy being uncomfortable in the train for the 7 hour journey.

Do I need to provide some sort of license/registration for my dog when I book the tickets? Any sort of documents or proof that needs to be shown whether they have been vaccinated?

Apollyon I recall, had his golden retriever puppy transported from Bangalore to Pune through Kingfisher Airlines. ATM, he seems to have gone for a trip as his FB status puts it else it may be wise to drop him a PM and check out.

@Sunny:

Should be fine in my opinion. When ever the train halts, take him out so he can stretch his baby limbs and beckon the calls of nature.

Ya, book the dude a birth. Kewl. :)

i took two pups (1 labra and 1 golden retriever) from delhi to lucknow in AC first class, both of them slept throughout the journey and i did not face any motion sickness problems with them. The TC was another problem extorted 500 bucks from me :(

You had to pay money to the TTE even after you booked a berth? WTF!! I wonder what the reservation chart would say - "Dog's name" "M" "0 years"

I might be wrong, but aren't all Shatabdis Chair Car only? If that's the case, I guess the pet rule won't apply.

^ Oh he can, but I am just going by the wordings of the rule. Chair Car really is a different class from First AC

--- Updated Post - Automerged ---

You can take your pet dog along with you in AC First Class or First Class, provided you reserve either a two berth or a four berth compartment exclusively for your use, paying the luggage scale rate for 60 kg.

Passengers travelling in other classes are not permitted to carry the dog along with them.

It mentions a compartment. Chair Cars don't have compartments. So atleast technically, I think OP might not be able to use Shatabdi.
