How to use 2 DSL connections together?

Mohit

I am having 2 DSL connections. Airtel and Bsnl. I have connected both the modems to different LAN (RJ 45) ports on my PC. One is on the on-board LAN of the motherboard and the other is on a separate D-Link LAN card. I am using Win XP SP3.

I want to know if its possible to combine the speeds of both the connections and use them simultaneously.

Currently, when I tried connecting them together, I get the following message:

Here is a screen shot of how my setup looks like at present:

I also want to know what do I put in right now in the following fields for both the connections:

IP address

Subnet Mask (This will come automatically I guess)

Default gateway

When I had just one connection, I just used the following:

IP : 192.168.1.11

Subnet : 255.255.255.0

Default gateway: 192.168.1.1

But its confusing with two connections :S

Please help. Thanks !!

It is possible to do same with firewall (hardware or software).

Try using this - Ipcop its a software firewall based on linux, you will need to set it up in a virtual machine.

Download vmware server its free and resource friendly and you will also need a second Lan card

What ???

I am using XP SP3 and I already have 2 LAN cards.

NO I do not Think You Can Combine the bandwidth of both connections...

what you can do is that you can use other one as backup in case main one is down... If you are hellbent on using both connection then you need a Load Balancer.. Now load balancer can be a Hardware based ... or a Load Balancer implementation on a separate PC.. which will be on your home network.. Saw a rather interesting Load Balancer/Router implementation of linux based OS. you can try google for it...

Still One thing One process will not utilize the Combined bandwidth.

Suppose process 1 is connected to internet through Connection 1 with B/w-A mbps Then another process 2 can connect through internet using COnnection 2 of B Bandwith.

So combine bandwith for Process 1 and 2 is A+B but not Process 1 using A+B that is not possible..
Virtual OS implementation is Ok.. you can use one connection is Virtual OS and other on Host OS.. But soon you will grow tired of running a virtual PC ...

and so will be from running a router based load balancing implemention of Linux ..

Easiest is to buy Dlink Load balancer but sadly it only provides for backup and do not let you use both Connection at the same time... theoretically it should have an interface to balance the load on basis of rules sending few request to con1 and other to con2.. and hence combining both the bandwidth but since i never used it i cannot be sure...

Peace

hmm, first thing first, you cant have two dsl connections from a pc. Hence you will need to use the modem in pppoe mode instead of bridge. Make sure they have different IP address and range. NExt, you will need to provide either dynamic routing - balance load based or static routing. Both are provided best in linux as compared to xp.

So thats where you are stuck.
