My friend has subscribed to a internet service. the service provider provides a RJ45 connection till home. Now instead of ordering a router, He (yes its a he :D) ordered a Modem + router.I feel the modem + router should work. Require your help as to what settings i should change to make it work

That is the problem. It has no WAN port. Only 4 LAN ports and 1 DSL port (RJ11)

Its not possible check closely, on one of the ports (mostly first or fourth) , WAN will be written within brackets or something...

Specs page says :

CONNECTIVITY
AntennaeExternal
Number of LAN ports4
Number of WAN ports1
Number of USB Ports0
WANRJ-11
LANRJ-45[DOUBLEPOST=1389870655][/DOUBLEPOST]

Well according to this picture , the WAN port is not mentioned on the router , but there is one , manuals might help you !

Try the guides here :

http://www.tp-link.in/products/details/?model=TD-W8951ND#down

When u open the router page , during setups , there will a place to sellect ISP ..

Options will be : Dynamic IP ADDRESS , Static IP ADDRESS,PPPoA/PPPoE,Bridge Mode.

Select Dynamic IP address to use just as router , or id u are using modem in Bridge mode , then select bridge mode (advanced users).

The only problem is figuring out , which is the WAN port !

The wan port is the ADSL port!! I sold of mine. I tried everything and it did not work. Even the technical support says its not possible.

The problem is the NAT only works with ADSL. tp-link has models that do NAT off WAN as well as ADSL. This isn't that model.

Was using TP link 8968,port no 1 is wan port in that, ADSL is a separate port..

I'm now using WR841... Had wr740n before that.. Since I found router plus modem combo seems to work better and plus added benefits of dd wrt and open wrt..

Yes, your model has the EWAN (tp-link speak for ethernet wan connections).

Whereas the 8951 does not have ewan.

I thought there was another model that also had ewan but it seems the 8968 is the only one.

Sure, best of breed discrete is usually more flexible than all-in-one.

But people always want the cheaper unit which is a compromise.

another thing you need to take into consideration that dhcp won't be enabled as long as you are using regular rj45 as WAN. you can connect it to a LAN port and configure Static/Dynamic IP for the WAN

Won't work unless the router can NAT to those addresses. That won't happen with a model that cannot do WAN on the ethernet port.
