APTonCD for ubuntu n its flavours will help you backup ur APT cache(packages in cache)
basically... the contents of /var/cache are backed up n stored in iso.
incase of format.. u can restore these packages through APTonCD...but u still need to install them manually(atleast in mint that is the case..dunno abt ubuntu main release)
this is just to save time in dloading all the packages again...u can manually backup that location without APTonCD though...
