How to use backup on the same HDD

Hi friends

My friend is currently using Win7 Ultimate. He had made its backup using the inbuilt Win7 backup utility on the partition named D:\

The backup consist of 15 gb of data. Can he write the same on the C:\ partition of the same HDD and if yes, how?

The entire point of backup is that it should available when there is a failure of the primary data holding device. So if the hard disk crashes, how will he access the backup?

15GB is nothing. Buy a cheap 32GB pendrive, if budget does not permit an external HDD for storing back-up.
 
Yes I know that backup is important but my friend wants to reinstall his windows 7 as it has become very bulky due to installation of many softwares etc.

He had earlier made its C:\ drive backup at D:\ partition and now wants to use that backup to install win7 and that backup is of 15 gb.
 
You can format c: and reinstall windows and once done you can restore the backup.
Or restore it without installing windows again.
