After buying lots of stuff from TE, i have started shopping from online shopping sites. The price tags generally says 64% -67% off and shows a lower price. Say the price of a 2GB pen drive is originally tagged at 800 bucks and after applying 64% (so called) discount they try to sell it at 289 buck, which is the local price of a 2GB pen drive.

Now whats this suppose to mean, do they qoute the MRP printed on the product or what?

Yup, generally they do quote the MRP of the product and after that offers some discount which makes them equivalent to local price with some up's and down's. There are some exceptions though :)

Yeah there are exception....but the quote MRP is quite high. Do they want to prove to there customers that they give whooping discount of 60% 70% etc

That's the only reason everyone can think of :P

Completely agree, they try to exploit consumers tendency to fall for sale/discounts.
Original prices are much less than quoted. Its basically a scam.

Well, except the exceptions max. are same case. Like when I looked at Optimus One at Flipkart it seemed nice to me for Rs. 11999/- after looking some in eBay for 15k, but when I checked out Mobile Store just after that, I saw the same price there. So nothing glamorous offer.

i only buy online when i know their actual prices from local shops.....95% of the online shopping sites prices are very high compared to local shops.

Most such offer sites give MRP that too when the product was launched for the first time then show off with xx % discount ;)
