Guide Howto: Remove SATA HardDrives in "Safely Remove Hw"(Systray Icon)

If you have the nvidia IDE (like mine) and or raid enabled, you have the
drives listed under Add/Remove Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Systray.

Who will 'remove' working hard-disk(s) !!! :S Stupid M$

To have it gone from now and forever use this -
  1. run - regedit
  2. Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvata
  3. Create a dword value named "DisableRemovable" without the quotes and set the value to 1

If you dont have the nvata key (e.g nforce 3 drivers or older) do the same in :
Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvatabus
Create a dword value named "DisableRemovable" without the quotes and set the value to 1

DONE

NOTE: This will just remove the list name in the stupid Safely Remove LIST. It will not remove the HardDisk from you system/My Computer.
But you can still see your Printers, Scanners, Pen Drives etc.

Please, TE friends, if you know how to do the same on intel based motherboard, pls post.

Actually SATA harddrives are built to be hot swappable (at least the standard allows for that), so MS is NOT being stupid. Of course, it is not that common a use, seing as SATA is used a lot in the non-server market.

I agree totally.

this tweak has been posted in a number of other sites before.. anyway thanks for sharing

i think theres an option in advanced computer properties for this which might be easier than editing the registy.. think there was an option like optimize for easy removal or such that you had to uncheck.. not sure

This feature is a God Send for me as it allows me to gracefully disconnect/remove my HDD in an eSATA external case. Without this feature I had to SHUT my computer before I could remove the eSATA HDD. THANK YOU M$ !! :)

So we agree that there should be some form of option for removal? Perhaps not in the same place as removable USB type storage, but it should exist. SATA was created to replace SCSI. Hot plugging has always been one of SCSI's main selling points.

nope i m talking about removing the sata drives only.. i used to get it last time when i installed the nvidia ide drivers
anyways dont really have a problem with that icon.. would be nice to actually hot swap drives

Hot Powering Off or Disconnection of a HDD in an eSATA case is a BIG FAT NO NO !!! XP locks up tight if I switch off power or pull the data cable to the external eSATA case. No matter what Vantec says their eSATA case is NOT hot pluggable. The only safe way to remove the eSATA HDD is to shut XP or use the safe to remove icon in the systray.
