HowToGeek: Beware: Free Antivirus Isn’t Really Free Anymore

^^ but you can't run MS-SE and WD together. only one will be enabled at a given instance.

i've been using MS-SE since its release. i think it's perfect for windows PC.

Yep, that's right, and I believe MS-SE is for Win7 (which I have) and WinDefender is for Win8+ (which I also have).

A good pair of gloves, process explorer and Autoruns. win10 already has defender so...

On the office laptop, McAfee suite. cant uninstall it though.

I used to use Avast Free AV back in the Windows XP & 7 days but ever since the launch of Microsoft Security Essentials I've been using it not once was i ever tempted to switch to something else. I never have purchased an Antivirus software, never felt the need for a premium one. I think MSE is the best optimized AV for Windows, I don't recommend any of my friends to use any other AV.

MSE was once a great antivirus, but recent reports from antivirus testing show that its detection has fallen way below.

I have been using Avast free for a long time now, and I am pretty happy with it.

That article is pretty much useless. Rather than writing such articles, they should be writing articles about how to avoid the bundled software that are being bundled with free software nowadays. That will prove quite helpful for the users. There are excellent free software available over the internet, and that goes for antivirus too. Avast has been excellent for me, and I install it on my PC, and my friends and family, and it keeps them safe. So, why would I use a commercial antivirus, when I do not have the need for the various features that come with them?

Similarly about other free software. When there are so many excellent free software available, why should I buy? I suspect these articles have some kind of vested interest, and they want people to buy commercial software. Rather, there should be articles about free software, and how they are at par or even better than commercial ones.

Yes, bundled software and adware are being bundled with free software these days, but these can be avoided easily if people are careful a bit... it would help if articles providing knowledge on how to avoid these are written, rather than above ones.
