Hello all, :)
This my first post on techenclave and I thought what better way to start than ask for your opinion on this new rig I am gonna get myself. There is still a week to go before I make the final decision (VAT fever????). Anywayz here goes :-

Asus a8n-sli-deluxe (How is the onboard surround sound?)
amd athlon 64 939 3500+ winchester (Do you think the performance difference (btwn 3200+) is worth the extra price?? How much overclock can be done with stock cooling?? I need advices from guys who own this proccy.)

transcend 1 gb 400 mhz (*2 ???. Any other better quality RAM??)
17" Screen CRT Samsung / LG (what's the big deal with flat screens anyway?)
Seagate 160gb SATA
PSU Powersafe 500W PSU
Lite-On SOHW-1633S
Numeric 800VA UPS / APC Smart-UPS 1000VA (I'll be using a 19" monitor sometimes.)

geforce 6800gt 256mb ---- the graphics card seems to be the biggest problem here. See, only the asus v9999 (128 mb???) and xfx are available here in Mysore.
Asus v9999GT --- 26k
xfx ----------29k
I heard XFX has heat issues and is a poor overclocker. Is this true? (I would only overclock after a year or so).I want the system to be absolutely future proof for 3-4 years. Also any advise from Mysorean veterans here on reliable dealers who will quote realistic prices will be greatly appreciated. :)
Also, do you guys know where I can get the gainward,MSI,gigabyte cards. Budget is not a big constraint. I heard that gainward would take atleast a month to arrive in India. MSI and Gigabyte --- not available..
Please post your recommendations, opinions and/or two cents regarding the configuration.

Totally offtopic: TA had quite a nice feature called gallery. Maybe techenclave should get one too..... :)

Thanks

the a8n sli deluxe is a good board . about the onboard sound even if its good , it wont compare to a decent dedicated soundcard. consider throwing in a soundblaster live! 24bit

for cpu, a 3200+ can easily be overclocked past 3500+ speeds, however if you want performance at stock speeds a 3500+ will be the better option

for ram, 512mb *2 should suit most ppl . transcend is a good make but make sure it comes sealed in a box (to verify its authenticity)

Thank you bottle,
I thought that I would go for a soundcard after sometime (when I buy a really good set of surround speakers. Right now I think I'll settle for a zalman headphones). :)

I think I'll stick with the 3500+ because like i said I'll only be overclocking after a year or so. To what speeds can the 3500+ overclocked with stock cooling?

About the RAM I am *planning* to go for 1GB * 2 transcend 400 --- What I wanted to know is that since memory sometimes becomes a bottleneck for overclocking, should I go for one with higher bandwidth?

Yup gotta agree with bottle, discreet sound cards will make for a much better choice. Also i dont think the 3500+ justifies its price tag of arnd 13k (last heard).

Stay away from the Asus v9999GT. Its a farce........actually a joke. A 6800GT chip on a 6800 PCB ! To top it it comes with only 128Mb DDR ram rather than the default 256Mb Gddr3 and is clocked @ 700Mhz rather than 1Ghz on the std 6800GT. And if that wasn't enuf, they had the nerves to price it similarly to the 6800GT. :@

Also the prices quoted on the xfx 6800gt are a bit high since they are arnd 25.5k in mumbai. For gainward cards goto http://www.mediatechindia.com/ and contact them regd the same. Another options would be leadtek cards, though availability cud be an issue.

one of the board members virtually own that rig you posted... Ask funkymonkey or Darklod... Both have a XFX 6800 GT on ASUS A8N SLI... The CPU's are 3200's though...

Is this a flat screen monitor? Could you please mention the model no.

@ Switch : I've pm'd both sunny and Mask and Isn't xfx 6800gt a poor overclocker?

Well i own a XFX 6800 GT and it easily does ultra tough i run it on stock... To be honest i have seen XFX Gt's to be one of the great overclockers... Try hardforums and there you would find a lot of people Overclocking XFX's to well above 400 core stock being 350...

Asus a8n-sli-deluxe (How is the onboard surround sound?)--------> Its a very Nice board to have.Onboard sound is also decent.

amd athlon 64 939 3500+ winchester (Do you think the performance difference (btwn 3200+) is worth the extra price?? How much overclock can be done with stock cooling?? I need advices from guys who own this proccy.)------------> No need getting 3500+ get 3200+ it easily works @ 2.5 GHz on stock cooling for daily use.Can go upto 2.7GHz for sure.
transcend 1 gb 400 mhz (*2 ???. Any other better quality RAM??) -----> Good RAM,if budget is no problem get Corsair XMS if you want performance RAm as thats the only one available.

17" Screen CRT Samsung / LG (what's the big deal with flat screens anyway?)------> Go for Samsung.Well the overall feel of Flat screens is better.

Seagate 160gb SATA-------> Good choice but i generally dedicate a small drive of say 40gigs for OS and software installations. So i guess you cud buy 120GB & 40GB.Just my suggestions.

PSU Powersafe 500W PSU---------> Get Antec Smartpower 400 instead of that.

Lite-On SOHW-1633S---------> Stay miles away.Get Pioneer 108D/109D or Asus one as its based on Pioneer or even Benq DW1620.LG is good too.
Numeric 800VA UPS / APC Smart-UPS 1000VA (I'll be using a 19" monitor sometimes.)-----------> Your choice Numeric is good too.

geforce 6800gt 256mb ---- the graphics card seems to be the biggest problem here. See, only the asus v9999 (128 mb???) and xfx are available here in Mysore. -----------> Hmmm your choice, cant say much here. But Asus quality is better.XFX is a good card too.
