Hi,

I have HP DV6-3057TX which I m using with Cooler Master Notepal U2 but without fans as wire of fans is broken. However from last 2-3 days temprature are shooting up really high even on Idle. It went as high as 91 degrees on idle. I m using it on AC power most of the time with battery removed.

Solution for this might be Re-TIM the Proccy and GFX unit but I have never opened any Laptop before, Hence bit skeptical about doing it myself.

My doubt might sound noob-ish but is it really to complex procedure to follow or there is SOP ?

Regards.

Most likely a dust-clogged heatsink not the TIM. They use thermal pads not thermal paste, so unless you have spare thermal pads its wise not to undo the heatsink. Also the processor/GPU die is bare, so theres a possibility of chipping or cracking it if you're not careful.

Disassembly instructions : http://www.insidemylaptop.com/disassemble-hp-pavilion-dv6-laptop/ . Hopefully this is the right model. Looks a bit complex, but shouldn't be too hard if you have the instructions open side by side in another computer.

Thanks buddy. Yesterday night I searched a video from youtube about disassembly of my DV6. Played it on my iPad and could open the lappy. In afternoon Re-TIMed the both proccy n GPU. No thermal pads. Already there was a half dried TIM present.

Overall process was easy to do. I could clean quite good amount of dust too. Right now operated it for 30 mins around with a 720p video running for 20 mins, temps are reachin 75 on 1 of core and 65 around for GPU which are good 10-15 degrees lesser but still high I guess. Vents are clean and they are not blocked.

What possibly could other culprit for high temps ?

Did you clean the fan as well? Dust can clog the blades of the fan making it spin slower than the regular speed.

Yes I did clean fan as well as heat sink fins. Right now using it since an our around for normal web surfing. Temps are in range of 50-78 degrees.

I m on AC power only with no battery inserted.

Were you able to open the heatsink shroud? Usually a layer of dust forms on the inside of the vents (marked by red arrows) which you won't see.

Cleaning the vents externally didn't help in my case, but opening up the shroud and cleaning the dust from the inside dropped temps from 90C to ~65C full load.

Nope I dint open that black thing. Will try it tommo and report back. Also 1 more thing noticed. Temps were higher when I was on AMD 5650 graphics compared to when I was on Intel HD graphics. Anything suspicious here ?

I opened lappy again today but however I could not open the that black cover completely due to unavailability of screw driver but however I blew air many times around this thing and some dust did came out :joyful:. Right now temps are n range of 38-56 degrees which is again more cool than earlier situation. This is without my Cooler Master Notepal U2, hoping to see temps dropping further when I buy a Notebook Cooler or some fans for my Notepal.
