while I understand the delay part but after a deal has been reached, there should've been one of two things:

OP says in his post that he's been stood up thrice by you, if that is true, something is to be said for that, if you told him you were getting it picked up, and didn't, thats a problem.
Something is also to be said about the fact that if he's said no to other people because you were unable to pickup or complete the arrangement.

There is no communication between 26th of Mar till 16th. Thats a while, you should've made sure that the pickup took place.

Now where the OP is wrong, you can't just take the token and keep it, if you want to deduct 500 bucks or something for inconvenience, but the rest has to be returned(if the deal isn't going through). And yes increasing price beyond what is listed here is also an issue. I would advise completing this deal asap at 8k and call it a day.

This is the first time that his (my friend's) mother got admitted to the hospital. I don't know how he came up with 3 instances.

When my friend is finally free when his mom is back. They connected, and my friend called him, but he didn't pick up the phone, and then the very next morning, he backed out

May as well be, but you do realise that he would have said no to other buyers, waiting for you to complete the deal, pay him the amount and pick the item up, although one can be compassionate about your friends predicament, however the onus of getting the item picked up was on you. You should've made good on your word and got it handled asap rather than delaying the deal for three weeks, or told him upfront to refund the amount and go ahead with another buyer. You can't leave a seller in limbo, you could've sent him the whole amount as well during this time, as a gesture of good faith. Or you should've updated him periodically during this time and given him a tentative date when you could get it picked up. Communication should've been better. Still I would say, this doesn't mean that you can forget about the token, I would still say to send the pending amount and pick the item up.

That's fine, I am not backing out of the deal, but now he is asking 1000 more than the agreed amount. and 500 more than the listed amount, that is the problem.

I've already written that in my original post that 8k deal should stand. There is no justifiable reason to increase the price beyond mentioned.
