Last night HTC released an update for Desire HD which brings it up to firmware version 1.84.720.3 and Android version 2.2.1

The official changelog is speed improvements & camera improvements but I have found the following changes on my Desire HD after updating.

1. Display-- Brighter, increased contrast, saturated colors.

Not sure how HTC manged to do this through a software update but my phone's display now looks like a OLED :ohyeah:

2. The UI is much much more snappier. Theres no juddery animations anywhere now. Infact the touch responsiveness feels much more improved.

3. The camera now takes much less time to focus. Captures accurate colors at standard setting & now has a self potrait mode.

4. HD video recording is much improved. The sensitivity is improved & the colors are much more richer. Also if u pan around the camera the focus readjusts very quickly.

5. Subtle changes in the UI for messaging & mailing apps. facebook app is improved.

6. The phone now natively supports DIVX and XVID playback.

7. Can confirm that the sound through earphones after the update is louder. And the best part is there is now a real thump in the bass. :D

8. Battery life much improved-- infact i was shocked to see that i managed to make my phone last for a couple of days on a single charge with light usage (except data) without the usb debugging option enabled... :D

So how has the update worked for all you guys out there? Are you observing the changes that i have listed? Any other changes that u have observed.

Let us know

:)

as far as i can tell battery life is still the same...about a day at most....mind u this with 100% brightness, all apps set to auto-sync, all plugins always enabled & mobile data always on at off...

Will update as soon as i reach home. The improvements seem to be really worth. Will give feedback after I update. Thanks for the info.

Updated.

Don't know whether it's a mere coincidence or the result of the update but my gmail app and market app have stopped working. Getting a no connection error in gmail and network error for market :(

Thanks a lot HTC.. Am loving my phone a looot more now... Something that i noticed

The video player has been added an option to fullscreen and play in orginal reso.

Cheer guys :ohyeah:

Is your problem with Desire HD update solved yet? GMail and Market not working over wi-fi. My nephew has a HD and he is getting the update prompts. He is wondering whether to go ahead with the update or not because currently everything is working fine in his cellphone. Are there any major benefits with this update?

Also, HTC has promised a Android 2.3 update for all Desire variants. Now suppose if he doesn't download the current update, will he still be able to update to 2.3 whenever that becomes available? In other words can we skip an update and go to the next one directly or does it have to be done sequentially?

plz check his other thread. His problem with gmail etc etc was solved automatically after a while. I have been using this update and i have had no problems till now (been using it since 16 mar).

To answer your second question, no you dont have to update sequentially to get the 2.3 GB update ie you can skip this update. But my question to you is why you want to skip this meaningful update out of paranoia that some user had a little bit of issue (which was an isolated incident BTW).

Thirdly regarding the major benefits of this update, plz read my first post in the thread. if those dont count as major benefits to you then you should ask your nephew to stay off the 2.3 GB update as well because GB doesnt bring any thing major over froyo.

I guess one cannot skip any intermediate update to get new updates unless until HTC decides to withdraw the intermediate updates due to some bugs. But when GB update is available, you can update the intermediate one and then immediately can update to GB! Usually HTC OTA updates will work based on version numbers.

Enhanced battery life and camera improvements seem to be the most important benefits with this update. Will give it a try! Thanks for your reply.

just noticed that my desire hd is also offering this update to me. i had to manually check for it, the auto updating checking thing hasn't told me to update even once :|

so a question... how big is the update? and do i need to back up my data from the phone before applying it? i.e. will my data, files, contacts etc. get wiped when i update? first time i'm doing this, so i'm a newbie. is the update simply a matter of downloading, applying and restarting?

the OTA update is 47 mb in size and its an automated process. you just go on pressing the on-screen prompts and it will take care of the rest. The phone will restart a couple of times though. Every data ie contacts, sms etc etc is preserved even after the update but its a good idea to back up your data first.

Believe me the most important improvements are

1. enhanced sound quality & volume

2. much better battery life

3. serious improvements in display quality

4. Overall smoothness improvements

alright i just updated. went through smooth, no issues. i checked gmail and market, both are working fine :P

sound does seem a bit louder, not really sure though. can't tell any different with the screen yet. will report back after some time if i notice any improvements with battery life.

Have been hearing this for sometime now, though am yet to receive it. I have downloaded the (UK version ?) Gingerbread ROM for one of the carriers, but then felt lazy doing the rooting and stuff. Will wait :D

What happens if the update procedure gets interrupted due to a break in internet connectivity? Does the phone become unworkable? Can we just resume the update from where it stopped or do we have to go through the whole procedure again?
