From a developer and hacker/modder perspective which of these (HTC Desire OR the Nexus One) would be a better choice? and why?

Well the hardware has small (but significant differences).

But would like to know from availability of custom ROM's, ease of applying (rooting etc.), future update availability and general developer hacking which would be a better choice.

BTW are there any users here who are using the Nexus One (do know that a few have the Desire but don't seem to recall anyone mentioning the N1)?

Its like asking which computer is better for developer and hacker/modder perspective !

Although both are almost similar, the Nexus One will be the first to get Android updates. Since its the reference phone, you will have a slight advantage and can use the latest and greatest features and APIs very quickly indeed!

From rooting/hacking/loading custom rom point of view, N1 has an advantage since I think the boot loader is unlocked and hence playing around with the device internals is easier.

Also when it comes to Android OS updates, N1 will be the first to get those updates.

But then, with the amount of skill people at xda have, they are pretty much able to hack anything and hence the Desire is as capable as the N1 in rooting/loading custom roms. But new releases from HTC will get delayed and so will the rooting/hacking methods for the new updates (official Froyo for desire is still not rooted, thought it is almost done, but N1 had root method for foryo long back)

Also considering Desire is official in India, one can rollback to official rom in case of warranty issues. Apart from the time factor, the Desire has an advantage since it is official in India.
