HTC Hero Launches in India

this is how pricing is done, Its about time for Apple to learn from HTC.

32K is a very genuine price tag, considering its still going for 590-600$ in USA.

If Apple doesnt launch 3gs within 2 months for a similar price tag for 32gb, they will lose a very loyal customer.

@Spacescreamer

Very true, we are getting Porcupine tree, not a bad bargain i guess.

No android market yet :(

didn't get you, you mean to say there is not market for android in India? or as in no (application) market for android yet?

If you mean the later, there is a huge android market available in all the android phones and the most of the good applications are free to download.

HTC Magic was introduced for 30k here and within a month or so HTC has dropped it price to 26k (retails for around 24 to 25k now), so lets wait and watch for some more time :P, HTC Hero price may also go down :P

He meant Android Market ( Market for android apps, similar to apple Appstore ).

Airtel ripped that off the Magic that released here. And Hero is mostly facing same fate which really pisses me off at this point.

Didn't you get your Hero from UK? is Market application missing in Hero or the Hero version supplied here by Airtel?

Is it not possible to have market in the phone by installing the modded ROM from any of the xda developers ?

(android phone without Market is like serving a good feast and not allowing to eat it :P)

@Dark Star, I am using a G1 with modded ROM and I am able to use the market section here and I have downloaded loads of applications :D, I was under the impression that the market is pre installed in Magic and Hero here in India :P

Cuz u guys get the Rock Concerts. ;)

yes, our return airfare+accommodation for rock concerts costs more than the difference between the maharashtra and rest of india pricing.

Yes, My phone was from UK. And I could use Market on it even without modded rom as it was using EU image.

But the Magic and now Hero that comes locked to Airtel ( phones from themobileshop / airtel shop ) didnt include market in their Rom image.

Actually I sold my white Hero yesterday and was going to buy black one locally. And unlike Magic, Hero 3rd party custom rom support is not great at the moment. Paul is also ducking out of Android. So I was hoping that they get it right here this time around with official rom image ( thankfully before stopping, he released two new roms ).
Anyway, this only means I wont bother with buying black one locally and I can save good 4-5k in grey market.

well according to the site , there is android market in this version
The HTC Hero comes equipped with access to the Android Market, where users can search and download applications to personalize and customize the phone.

hopefully someone who takes the plunge n buys it can confirm ?, and if u buy it for the SRP , it would be unlocked.

Hey... stop complaining :bleh: we still don't have Hero here yet ... or Samsung Galaxy for that matter. It seems Europe is getting all the good phones atm... well I will just have to wait a few more months until all the new phones start being released :'(

But you are getting Cliq, Galaxy light, Hero soon enough. God knows when glalxy or galaxy light and cliq will make it here if they ever do.

Will a normal data plan, i.e. Airtel Mobile Office/Vodafone Mobile Connect work on these Android phones ? I'm thinking of getting the Motorola CLIQ when it comes out. I heard its gonna retail for 400$ in the US, unlocked that too :D

yes, ofcourse, you shouldnt have any problems with any provider.

Android scene is actually maturing faster than I expected. The complicated/ lengthy rooting is already thing of past.

Still quite expensive. I'm ordering a brand new G1 from US and its working out to 17k inclusive of customs and shipping. Paying double the price of a G1 for 2 megapixels more and a sleeker form factor just doesnt cut it. If it had a price point of 25K ...then i would have surely gone for it .

Plus .. the new G! roms have the best features of the Hero incorporated in them... so its a win win situation...at half the price :)

Finally its here

but those SOBs ,
"The HTC Hero will be available at an MOP of Rs. 34,600 in Maharashtra and Rs. 31,990 in the rest of the country at all leading authorised HTC resellers across the country. "

why extra for Maharashtra , nonsense

Actually G2 / Hero has few more things going for it.

1st is larger RAM / ROM and program memory available. So you can install more apps on phone memory itself.

Second, future OS versions. Its almost certain G1 wont support android 2.x due to smaller ROM. And few other goodies like screen, size, Digital compass etc etc.

It will come down to personal choice in the end. You always have to pay premium for newer models in the beginning. :P

The only real con is FM. Other than that, most of the things have been sorted out. Lag is taken care off with new leaked official and also custom roms, Sense UI is arguably the best UI on any phone at the moment ( Webos is only other one I can think off ), Camera unit on this phone is surprisingly good just like Touch Diamond 2.

Agreed, when it launched it had its own problems, but things have changed for better. This is why I admire HTC. They managed to bring something to android that they managed with their WM devices, and thats the great community support in addition to their own work.
