Microsoft has no other intention of buying AOL other than the fact that it will clamp down on Google's plans. Google is also in the rat-race and when Google buys a company, it definitely has something BIG in mind.
If you remember a couple of weeks ago, Microsoft and Yahoo had announced an IM tie-up. Early next year, the msn and yahoo messenger networks will be bridged so people can cross chat with each other. Why did they do this? To compete with AOL which has more users than MSN and Yahoo combined! Google for the exact figures, can't remember right now.
Either way M$ is gearing up for the least damage.
