Hypothyroidism help!

I went for a health checkup and my doctor said that I have a thyroid problem.

I didnt probe too much in to this as my had mother accompanied me.

I am checking the report and it shows

TSH ( ultrasensitive) serum by CLIA - 8.99

Free T3 - 3.34

Free T4 - 1.01

Can any doctor or a person well versed in the field can help me with what should I expect, or suggest especially since he has put me on medication (Thyroxine sodium) for this.

you should expect nothing really. hypothyroidism rarely progresses to serious levels and can be managed with medications quite nicely.

your doc has already put you on medication, which by the way is the standard line of treatment for hypothyroidism.

did your doc advise you to get the thyroid profile done? what symptoms did you exhibit? how did you suspect that you had any thyroid problem?

if you have any doubts, you should ask your consulting doc any time. he is legally bound to answer your questions regarding your condition.

apart from that, at your age you probably won't be having any conditions like hypertension (high BP) or diabetes (high sugar), would you? if you have any idea about whether you do or dont, then please tell your doctor about it.

@Sheru ..

IMHO .. if at all.. u shd only ask ppl who have seen cases of hypo-thyroidism ..

u shd be consulting a doc locally or via some confirmed sources.

Asking stuff of this nature here can lead to confusion and God forbids, any miscommunication or mis interpretation can have grave consequences.

Take things as they come.

I seen a person with hypo-th. and he has been doing well since past 9 years .. self discipline and resolve. Nobody can say he has got that unless told.

I wish u luck and good health in future. :)

The doc hasnt said much expect to take one pill a day in the morning. Doc checked these along with sugar level and cholesterol due to Hypertension. Everything else is ok, and manageble. No Diabetes.

i advise go for a frank session.

if need be consult diff doc and confirm a nice regimen for urself.

Take it as a sign to get urself into a healthy and disciplined lifestyle.

I say that cuz thats the attitude of that person as well.

he eats well , lives well and hence stays fit.. as in top notch fit.

So dont blow ur top if the doc is fine with ur test. just get ready for a fitter life. :)

^^^ tats rite... most probably, ur doc wud have given u eltroxin, which is the hormone, thyroxine.

so, i think u r in the right direction.
bottom line is

1. regular followup with ur doctor.

2. take ur medications regularly.

3. report to ur doctor, if u r symptomatic ( dont want to go into too much of what symptoms will/wont come if u have hypothyroidism and confuse/panic u... :))

4. dont change ur medications' (strengths) by urself...

(doc... i felt comfortable with half tablet rather than one, so, for past 6 mons, im taking only half in t morning:S... dont do that...:))

Your doc has done the right diagnosis and has given you the right medications. You needn't do anything much other than diligently following his prescriptions.

Hypothyroidism can be manifest as:
Low BP
Low heart rate
Lethargy
Weight gain and obesity
Cold intolerance
Constipation

If left untreated, it might cause a swelling in the neck called as goitre. It rarely causes complications, but if there is goitre, surgical treatment might be necessary. Take the pills properly, and you'll have very little to worry about.

Hi sheru,

My suggestion will be to not take suggestions apart from people who personally know people with hypo TH.

My cousin had the same problem which was diagnosed very late. She put on lots of weight and had really bad eating habits to begin with. So first of all visit specialist who may be expensive but worth the money. Second kick the butt. Third join some yoga classes. She is improving thanks to yoga and yeah she is a non smoker.

Hope this helped.

Thanks everyone. Fairly all symptoms fit me very well.

Hopefully once the treatment starts, It should affect a lot of things positively, here's looking to that.

Some typical symptoms-

Irritability

Loss/thinning of hair

Unexplained gain in weight even if not eating much

puffiness of face/neck, water retention

Lethargy

Constant fatigue

increased sensitivity to cold

Depression

Muscle cramps and joint pain

Paleness/anaemia

Decreased sweating

low heart rate

Constipation

etc etc

What i have heard you need to take blood tests every 6 months and meter the dosage accordingly.

And once started, one is never supposed to stop taking the medicine as it may have disastrous effects
. :S

Dosage maybe be reduced a lot but never stopped. :S

And Sharekhan- doesn't matter how many pills.

What matters is the strength of that pill.

One pill can be of 25mg, 50mg, 100mg etc. :)

So someone on 75mg may taKe 2 pills- one of 25mg and one of 50mg. :)

Usual synthetic Thyroxine Sodium medication- Thyronorm or Eltroxin. :)
