I am using toothpaste as thermal paste

Hi

Recently my old Mobo ( P4 512 RAM :() specially the SMPS was making a lot of noise so thought of cleaning Mobo and oiling the SMPS fan :ohyeah: . Everything went fine but suddenly i was getting frequent shutdown of System after some investigation found out that the CPU temp was touching 90 - 95 C  So i thought of looking at the heat sink for the thermal paste and it thermal paste was almost vanished. Since it was night already and due to busy and hectic job :@ I was sure that i will not get time to go to buy new paste so thought of applying Toothpaste instead :ohyeah: i thought that it should last for 2 day max but to my surprise it has been more then 2 weeks already  Now the temp varies from 55 C to 64 C

Oh yes I used Pepsodent Kills Germs in 2 mins :ohyeah:

is this serious or are you playing a prank. Mind you people in TE are very resourceful and they will get back to you if this doesnt work or if it actually ruins the system. :P

It is not a prank I am damn serious. I suggest you all (I know you ppl are very smart :D ) not to take such risk for Long term Basis. I took the chance because the Sys is already very old :D also if you wish to apply the toothpaste apply it in very less Quantity not like when you apply in the Toothbrush lol

@ FaH33m No seems like i am his Dad :D

......ready to buy a new CPU/Mobo?

Dude it really depends on which Toothpaste, if has has fluoride it will eat up some components.

The poster just got lucky with his choice of tooth paste, not all will work and some will damage the parts.

Hope people dont use it as s substitute to Thermal paste for OC'ing.....

^^ Yes that's true I did it with the intention that i will buy thermal paste with in 3 days but did not get the time also i am constantly keeping a watch on Temp. I will my self buy Thermal paste ( That depends though busy with gf this weekend lol )

Hmm... thats a great discovery, that will help when we will have no time (or money ;)) to get TIM. BTW thats not a good one, coz your current temp are somewhat too high. Ideal temperature 50-60C is not good for your proccy.

OMG. Thats a cheap alternative.
:-/ Is that really an alternate? What are you going to say after there is some damage/corrosion??? hmm???

I am surprised OP didn't test the thermal efficiency of a pigeon poop. Seriously- what??? How much is a processor worth? Is it really worth risking over thermal paste that costs Rs. 100-350? If not would you still consider it as cheap?

Some people should think before posting as there are times where guests reads such posts and if they are newbies, they might end up doing and damaging something. Please keep some form of responsibility when/if one is going to make such posts.
