@blr_p:if you look at the comments.not even one is sane one.see ,the author of the blog does have a genuine issue.but nobody is there to have a discussion except for the trolling they does here.

No my friend, i'm very heartened to see the mature responses, pretty unanimous one would say :)

See, there was a time when linux was trumpeted by the bullhorn as the saviour to all our problems. Everywere you read, it was open source this, linux that.

Thats was well over 5 yrs ago.

No one thinks that way anymore, unless your bread & butter depends on it.

But PC's own consoles!!1

You made me literally laugh out loud

Err, I wouldn't go that far

even though the hype faded away, I suspect the adoption rate for Linux on the desktop has certainly gone up

Not to mention that *nix is and will remain the platform of choice for mid tier servers

^^Lol its a copy paste with Rich Text Editor Enabled

BTW it useless to fight... People will use whatever they feel like, we can't force them to use what we like.. Linux is a great platform but still until and unless big developers and company bring in products like Photoshop and other productive tools it just didn't satisfy the needs of all audience !

It is not true.GNU/Linux and FOSS are adopted fast(thank to recession,I say) these days. Not 5 years ago.Linux *IS* the better alternative among the likes of M$ window$ and OS X you know.

Huh ,what else do you think moron M$haft to have 235 patents FUD against GNU/Linux.why?ever wondered?

Actually ,popular opinion can be wrong too.you know.there needs to be some guts to show that Raja is naked.(here it is micro$haft and window$).

Personally, I feel that in places like webcafes and other limited use situations(data entry, typing, photoediting) as well as for low end PCs, using Linux makes a lot of sense. This is especially true in case of cafes where I've noticed the tech guys having to reinstall the OSes pretty much every other day due to malware and other problems because the idiots using it don't know what sites to go to for stuff. Most of the current builds of Linux can get all of the above functionalities without any hassles.

But if you play games, want to try out different utilities and don't want to be bothered with figuring out the dependencies etc then it doesn't make sense to have Linux even as a dual boot on your PC.

My idea is to not have multiple anything to do the same thing which is why I just have KMPlayer and foobar for my multimedia use and so on.

Also since MS isn't actively pursuing people with the ahem versions, their OS is as free for me as Linux is. Maybe if such a situation does arise where that changes then I will definitely switch over to Linux. Until then I'm happy with my trusty XP.

^^ who is Raja, and why is he naked?? :S

The Raja is naked coz he is the Raja and he can do anything he pleases.

pirated window$ users can justify that they are using a free operating system.indirectly ,they are helping microsoft.(I wont go more into details).

Linux OTOH ,is a community developed Operating System. It can really have the potential to kill window$ monopoly.sadly ,people are not much aware of the Freedom of choice ,Open Source etc.

who is wrong here?

Bangalore, Feb. 4 The economic slowdown is prompting companies to migrate even their mission critical systems to open source platforms such as Linux, a move that would help them cut costs, consolidate and run their IT infrastructure more efficiently.

Novell Inc, an enterprise infrastructure software and services vendor, expects more customers to migrate their mission critical applications onto Linux.

“Linux has seen most of growth coming from on the edge Unix processes. And, now, customers have started shifting the mission critical systems to Linux. That’s where we have focused aggressively as a company,” said Mr Ronald W. Hovsepian, President and CEO, Novell.

The Waltham, Massachusetts-based Novell sells Linux software under Suse brand that contributed for 15 per cent of the company’s $956 million earnings in 2008.

The emerging markets have been more aggressive with the adoption of Linux, primarily because of the value proposition it offers, compared with the proprietary software. “For the young markets, the baseline is going to be open source and Suse Linux will enjoy a strong position,” Mr Hovsepian said.

Revival of interest Recently, Sun Microsystems also said it has begun to see a revival of interest in open source software applications from customers in India as pressure mounts on them to cut costs in a weak economic environment. The high cost of software licences is a significant part of the annual IT spend for many customers, who are trying to avoid those costs in a recessionary environment.

Commenting on the current market conditions, Mr Hovsepian said the first half of 2009 would be slow in general terms and that the chief information officers will be reserved into spending.

“They are going to hold off their expenses as long as they can,” he said.

Novell, Mr Hovsepian said, has been focused on its cost structure for the two years that’s helping the company to manage operations effectively in a weak market.

Why do people hate linux without any experience?

Lets start with some stories.

My family and i were going to meet some friends an x-mas eve we had a great time and it eventually got around to what we were going to get that x-mas. I proudly announced that i was getting a new computer and there was marginal interest. My friend know today known as "X" asked me if it was a good computer to which i replied that it was a large improvement on my old one. She cut in and said "Oh sorry i meant is it windows" m reply "It came with vista but i removed it"

There was general pandemonium at the table and in a jokie way (X) asked "Are you crazy, why would you do something like that!"

Skip forward to yesterday i dropped some sheets from my pocket and another friend helpfully picked them up for me and they saw a screen shot of my desktop with compiz and asked "is this mac?"

I said no its linux, and this friend was very shocked. Apparently he thought linux was only a simple command line with a few poor quality gui's, this was surprising as my friend works in Pc world!!

I just had butter chicken with yoghurt and rice! Now I feel like farting a bit ! So where should I start !

Edit: My fart has a lot of viruses which spread through photons so please keep your PC away from it ! :P

WE CONTINUE exploring Microsoft’s mischiefs which were intended to derail Intel’s support of GNU/Linux. We make careful use of antitrust evidence that appeared very briefly in 2007 and then pulled due to a secretive settlement. Previous posts on the subject include:

Today we take a look at Exhibit px06600 [PDF], Exhibit px06601 [PDF], and Exhibit px06604 [PDF]. Their lengths are 6 pages, 7 pages, and 5 pages, in turn. They overlap although they were scanned separately to be used as evidence. Having removed the repetition we have summed up all the text in the following two PDFs (thanks to Arun):

The originals, which are raw scans, are available from the links further up. We also have them as plain text at the bottom. Let us go through some highlights in a chronological order.

It started with an alarming message to Microsoft employees (from Microsoft’s Mike Porter). This stated:

Intel decision to deploy Linux for EDA (chip design)

Intel plans to deploy Linux to run their internal EDA (chip design) applications, due largely to NT stability issues. Andy, Craig, and Albert have all committed to maintain their long-term strategy on NT, and work closely with us on messaging for Workstation Leadership Forum. Intel has been trying to move it’s internal chip design applications from AIX to NT for ~3 years. There are two key apps; desktop (interactive design toots) and server (C-Sym, a batch processing app). The server application has been ported, but Intel cannot get close to the 99% availability target required for production use - they claim ~96%. They have frequent system hangs and “blue screens’. We offered support thru local MCS, but Intel (Albert Yu) rejected our bid. They wanted more MS skin in the game. Albert and Louis Burns (VP IS) share the decision. Because of project deadlines, and their desire to design on Intel based systems, Intel did a quick port of C-Sym to Linux. The Linux version ls ’more robust than the AIX version’. Stephanie Boesh has put together a SWAT team and she has been working to pull multiple group together within Microsoft to improve this relationship and get the project back on track. Last week, we re-secured Albert Yu’s commitment to make this work.

At a later stage, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer were entered into this debate.

As soon as Ballmer saw it he replied briefly and bluntly:

Subject: RE: Intel/Microsoft Marketing

We cannot let intel do chip design on Linux ever what do we need to do to change the decision who do we need to call we will put whatever w skin to the game they need.

Less than an hour later Bill Gates jumped in as well:

Subject: RE: Intel/Microsoft Marketing

At the workstation leadership forum they reiterated their commitment to move all their stuff to Windows 2000.

I asked our people many times if there is any backsliding on their not using Linux for this.

If this has changed I wasn’t informed. I knew I would get a chance to talk to Barrett and the question I asked was whether I needed to bring this up or not.

If we are not in good shape on this I need to know.

It’s worth emphasising that no other person at Microsoft talked about shooting down Linux at Intel. It’s only Ballmer and Gates who had to pounce on this opportunity
