One of those guys who used to believe people don't slap for free these days, let alone a reward. But I always used to play these spin the wheel, place the unique bid and all randomly.
Recently there was Cred bidblast for a lot of things, and guess what happened with me. I placed some of the bids using those coins I had, and luckily enough I was among the two unique placed bids for iMac 24 inch.
Initially I thought this might be a joke or something, how can I win that out of nowhere. But oh good lord, upon follow up, I got to know I have actually won a 24inch iMac, the latest one, a friggin 1.30 lacs worth of a machine! God freaking damn!
But, like a good community, it is time for a bit of thought process to go into it, so help me out folks.
Currently owned machines with the purpose :
1. PC Build (over the years I have done this, I really love this, there is a sentimental value but definitely the issue of mobility).
Specs -
i5 7600k
Gigabyte GTX 1080ti 8GB windforce OC edition
MSI z170a mpower gaming titanium
LG g32k650f 32" gaming monitor - 144Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time.
Couple of gaming mouses - Deathadder + Steelseries 1800-2000 one.
Some Redgear MK881/81 Mechanical keyboard.
Lian Li o11 air black PC case with 9ARGB fans of 120mm each, all from Coolermaster, routed via Razer chroma ARGB controller to make it all like a UFO ready to abduct me.
Coolermaster Air cooler.
Usage - This is my main machine, I hardly game now, but I use this machine for creative purpose which include music production(ableton live is definitely resource hungry, not to mention variety of plugins needed while mixing or the synthesizers for sound design). This machine is obviously bulky and hence sits on a table in my bedroom, with watching content and music production as its only 2 main tasks. The monitor paired with the GPU is definitely some quality view to consume content, even then I hardly watch stuff on that for more than 8-10 hours a month.
2. Macbook Pro 15inch, 2012 model, i7 processor, 16GB ram and 500GB ssd. This is my portable mac and I use it for just one thing, which is DJing. This is not the fastest machine, obviously, but is well maintained to keep the DJing part smooth, and I have done gigs as long as 5-6 hours with this machine plugged in, never faced a hiccup on that, but I don't even try installing anything else, reason for that is simple - why would I use 15inch of a display when I have 32 inches.
3. If and when I receive - the iMac 24inch with M1, seems like a powerful enough machine, but I would have my vices against a head to head comparison with the build I got. Then again, I believe my usage would be sorted with this, shall be really good to handle Ableton live and all the plugins, and if I figure out the monitor part, I don't think anything stops me from connecting the external monitor with it, or maybe get another 24inch only sleek monitor to make it all uniform.
Here come the options where I need recommendations from you good folks of TE :
Option 1 - I sell the old MBP, and the fresh iMac, use the money out of both of these to get a new MBA or MBP with M1, I get a new DJ machine that I can sometimes use for other purposes too. The sentimental value of the PC build stays intact.
Option 2 - I sell the PC and the old MBP, keep the iMac and buy a new MBA or MBP with M1, again I get a new DJ machine and a new sleek setup at desk which is less bulky, is mobile enough to be put on the backseat of a car with much lesser wires and much more ease, even if at some point I need to take it to a friend's place/studio for recording or something like that!
From monetary point of view, I guess I will be standing at a similar price point, but maybe I can get a little more by selling the iMac instead of selling the PC. Also, I am equally comfortable with both windows and iOS.
What would you have done if you were in my place?
I mean the current DJing machine works just fine, but is not the smoothest one to handle if I were to browse something in the middle of a gig (and that happens alot when you get a song request, you have to quickly open finder or maybe even a browser and download stuff on the fly.)
