Hello Guys,
on my laptop i have Windows Vista HP installed..
now C:\ is windows drive and D:\ is Recovery partition..
without touching D:\ drive which is recovery partition, can i install windows 7 on C:\ after formatting it?
if i get problems in windows 7, can i recover and get back to Windows Vista HP from recovery option?
Hope to see quick answers since i plan to install Windows 7..

I think it will work, incase if you fail to recover you can use Stellar Phoenix Partition Recovery software which is quite helpful and efficient. The software is a comprehensive windows partition recovery solution for data loss due to partition corruption, partition resizing, file system damage, boot sector corruption, MBR damage, virus infection and human errors. Compatible with Windows 7.0, Vista, 2003, XP and 2000...

@OP- I doubt you can retain the working condition of recovery partition after C Drive format. IIRC HP uses Recovery partition in the same HDD as C drive is in. Once you format the C drive, Recovery partition will get corrupted immediately making it useless. HP makes their Recovery Partition in such a way that it requires certain system files in C Drive to initiate its recovery in case of any OS problem.

IMO, if you already made or have recovery disk of your OS then you can try installing Windows 7 in C drive(after formatting Vista). If something goes wrong you can always recover the old OS using recovery disks.

BTW, I am using HP laptop with both my OS Partition as well as Recovery partition in my first HDD (i have 2 120 GB HDD in my lappy)

No. it doesn't happen like that. The Recovery partition is all u need for a recovery. Dats the whole point of recovery, ain't it?

In my HP Pavillion, there was a C: and a D:.

I installed my own XP and then used to restore from D: without any issues. And multiple times. :P

What u need to check is whether u are getting the option of recovery during boot or not probably along with BIOS option(F2). If u can see the recovery option before OS loads, it means even if u change the OS, u can still recover.
