Guyz I've a question for you,
A common practise one could notice is tht there will occur some subtle changes in the working of the OS in the due course of time like u could feel a slowness, errors occuring at some time or the other etc.... especially with Windows OS, rght. This may be due to occurence of junk files in plenty, incorrect registry entries etc. I just wanna know is there any way by which we could regain to some extent the freshness of the OS i.e; to remove all errors, delays n' ... u know the rest :)

Things you can do to bring some sanity to your os :

  • First thing to do is defragment to your disk regularly.
  • Defragement your paging file using sysinternals Pagedefrag it defrags both your paging file and registry hives.
  • Clean up junk files and redundant reg entries, both can be done using all in one clean up utility's like Ace utilities, Wintools etc, just becareful and always have backup, also you can use specialised tools to do the same.
  • If you use xp, enable prefetch, it is enabled by default but some people disable it.
  • If there are errors occuring, then get into event viewer, find out the file or driver causing the error and then try to find a solution.
  • About loads of junk getting stored in registry & folders, that cannot be avoided the more applications you install & uninsall more the junk, not all applications uninstall themselves cleanly they would always leave traces behind, if you get finnicky and try to delete them manually then you might end up having more trouble than their was originally.
  • There is nothing like a pristine installation of xp and that's the truth.

^ I still have fond memory of my first bsod caused due to super cleaning of system mechanic, hope they have improved, this was long long time ago ;)

I find it quite automated thats why i mentioned it.Otherwise i do all spyware+adware+virus scan+junk file cleaning+registry cleaning manually using different s/w.I use

1.Ad-aware+spybot
2.AVG
2.reg cleaner
3.window washer

i generally don't defrag the HDD.

I'm Having Windows Server 03. I Defrag It Regularly. Then Abt Page Defrag, Haven't Done So Far ... Will Surely Try Out Tht :)

Regarding Sys Mechanic, Once It Did Clean Up My Reg As A Whole N' Finally I Had To Reinstall My Os ...

I swear I have some kind of OCD with keeping my Windows installation as true to the out-of-box freshness as possible. So I've made a tweaking guide that's focused on cleaning and maintaining your Windows XP installation with built-in tools and freeware applications. You can find my guide at Whistling Cricket Windows XP Tweaking.

As for things I do outside of what's described on my tweaking guide, there's just one thing that is much too technical for the tweaking guide and people could easily screw up their Windows install doing it. Registry cleaners can be good (if you get a good one), but they don't catch everything. So after every uninstall of a program I make sure to check the HKLM\Software\ and HKCU\Software\ trees in my registry for old keys. I don't recommend doing this unless you're very sure you know what you're doing though.
