IB asks govt to block all net telephony services

The Intelligence Bureau has asked the communication ministry to block all internet telephony (VoIP) services to and from the country
until the Department of Telecom (DoT) puts in place a mechanism to track such calls.

Does it mean the following cannot be done :huh:

1. Voice chat through yahoo / gtalk ?
2. Connecting two phones using Jajah ?
3. I use Rebtel to connect to my family. That also blocked ?

How is it possible to block VOIP traffic though? (Apart from the usual blocking traffic through those particular ports.)
 
^I dont think there's any way to actully filter out VoIP traffic, how would they narrow it down? For instance, UDP port 1234 on IP A.B.C.D is VoIP, we need to block it
Even if ISP's block a particular set of ports, one can always change them.

I think it would be more feasble to block it out at Cellular Service provider level, nahi? But then again one can always do Phone-to-PC call..
I dont think it's feasable, It's like taking record of everyone using WiFi throughout the country.

Or maybe the IB intended only to block out VoIP via GPRS/EDGE/3G. Thats more feasable. Block out all traffic exept port 80/443
 
best they can do is track calls and ask companies to submit details reports of incoming & outgoing calls which itself will be a challenge for VOIP.

I dont think thats feasable.. Although all service providers mantain database of incoming/outgoing calls.
Installing a call filter mechanism at such large scale will cost a LOT and then there will be a huge hue and cry over privacy voilation
 
Government acting sensible this time. Else every time they implement ridiculous things in name of preventing terrorism and whatnot.
 
"Terrorism" has reduced to merely a way to take liberties away from the masses these days. It could well be the interests of telecom operators that might have lead to the IB's "advice" to the govt in the first place.

IMHO, nobody in the world is a terrorist....in my opinion its the most ridiculous world even invented.

There is a way to do this blocking. Coming from a Broadband background [And from a company most of you here have a love, hate relationship with] I have seen solutions provided which effectively monitor all the traffic from a single connection and what applications are utilizing the bandwidth.

It is possible to apply selective filtering on specific applications. This was tested on a trial basis. But this plan was shelved as the cost was not worth the effort.
