Legendary cartoonist RK Laxman passed away in Pune on Monday at the age of 93, a family member said, hours after he was put back on the ventilator following a multi-organ failure last week.

The eminent journalist was best known for creating the cartoon character The Common Man, who embodied the aspirations and troubles s of generations of Indians for over half a century. He continued to sketch until a few years ago for his daily newspaper strip You Said It that regaled millions through its sharp political humor.

Laxman, brother of late novelist RK Narayan, is survived by writer wife Kamala, son Srinivas and daughter-in-law Usha.

R.I.P Lakshman Sir,
Thanks for the creations which stirred serious thoughts in the morning with a smile.

Am actually glad that he finally passed on. Was hospitalized and went into critical condition too many times over the last few years.
Don't know what kind of person he was up close but he could have done with a lot less suffering-filled last few years of his life.

Thanks for all the witty creations!

I have been a huge fan of his cartoons and have collections of many of his cartoons - well known ones and obscure ones. I still get a smile on my face every time I look at them. Somehow I feel that I am able to reprimand the powerful, through his cartoons. My God give a place near HIM and provide solace to his near and dear ones.
