First off....I'm a n00b and so I ask

Secondly...
PC Config:
Core 17 920
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5
6GB 1333 RAM
GTX 260
1.5TBx2 + 1TBx1 HDD Seagate 7200.11
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Now My 1TB is full with my work data, so I cannot put any more data on it, roughly 6% free.

Right now my HDD's configured on IDE.
What are AHCI and RAID, which is better and more importantly how do I configure it????

I'm sure one of you techie out there must be using the same mobo and have configured RAID.....help me please

ACHI is better than IDE ... RAID is used for RAID functionality like mirroring, stripping+mirroring, jbod etc etc

I think u r not looking for RAID as u won't be moving data from your 1TB ... if u choose to do RAID , u will loose data because it's necessary to format HDD for using first time for RAID

RAID is used to get performance and/or protection from cheap hdds ... read about it on wikipedia

AHCI is useful with new HDDs supporting NCQ

wow that was quick.

but there aint no goof ups or setbacks in AHCI, are there? I mean any risk of DATA loss or something like that.

Plus will I have to format and reload my OS for AHCI....?????

I was considering installing 7 with AHCI but dropped the idea because :

1) I multi-boot. All OSs would need to be installed with AHCI.
2) Many other apps/utilities that I use from boot disks/USBs do not work with AHCI enabled.

So basically I would have to remember to enable/disable AHCI every time I booted.

^^^ can you please share which apps/utilities from boot disks/USB's do not work with AHCI enable. this could be helpful for me and others alike.

Edit : See post #14.

It was a while ago. What I remember is most of the utes on say Hiren BootCD did not work. Actually none of the "DOS/FreeDOS" utes will work, not abs sure. Even Acronis True Image BootCD did not work, I had 8.076 and 8.115. I think Parted Magic worked. The Windows XP Live CD & DOS BootCD I use also did not work.

I also remember the boot managers I use like GAG & PLOP could not read the HDD partitions.

As I mentioned, I can't be 100% sure. It was some time back.

Incorrect 100%, all current versions of any software support IDE, ACHI & RAID fully!

The latest Hirens Boot CD, Partition Magic, Acronic True Image & Disk Director works fine on my system (see sig) combination of RAID 5, RAID 1 & AHCI Drives.

Make a new Bart PE / Use a Windows 7 PE CD and it would also work.

DOS would never work as drivers are not present for DOS for AHCI/ RAID.

OK just a few things

I did a reinstall and i'm getting this right after the BIOS screen

is this normal....the Drive is an old IDE drive

oh and seems like AHCI slows down the installation speed of programs

noticed it in the installation of the HP Deskjet Full Feature Software. The last time it installed pretty fast, it shows the approx. speed which was 1400 KB last time

this time after switching to AHCI the speed went down to 600kb

Even Batman Arkham Asylum took a really long time to install, especially compared to the first time I installed(when under IDE mode)

^ yes ... with old IDE drive on AHCI enabled controller !!

and yes ... performance hit is also expected in some of area when AHCI enabled

You are right. Tried Hiren 10. Only Paragon Part Manager hung.

RAID 1 & 5 are comparatively safe.

Raid 1 has decent speeds

Raid 5 is fast for reads. But write speeds depend on your hardware. U need to try this and judge.
