I switched to my IDEA EDGE connection this morning after my Tata broadband connection was down. This is what I saw:-

The Huawei 3g modem, I have was latching onto the 3G signal although browsing speeds were purely EDGE. It kept alternating between 3G and EDGE. But I have a normal SIM, doesn't 3G need a different 3G capable sim?

On calling the IDEA care office, the person who answered the phone said, very enthusiastically,"we are rolling out our 3G services within 15-20 days, we aim to give you the best experience at competitive rates!"

Let's hope they have good, well priced unlimited download plans!

3G services do not require a different SIM card. However the new SIM card called USIM has additional improvements like security, storage etc. Check more on wiki.

And I think no operator will have "good (speed) unlimited download plans" on 3G. You will be better off on a fixed line connection.

Competitive - on par with competition. So if they price it 2000, we will charge 1999.

With BSNL's unlimited data plan at 1500, the private players will have to offer competitive pricing!

This is good news. I've been waiting for 3g on my permanent mobile number. At least here in MP, Idea has been consistently good in service/coverage/plans.

Its Rs 700 per month if paid for 6 mnths in advance with all taxes included. But problem is private operators dont consider BSNL even as a competition.

^^
So the tariffs from private players will be obviously higher than what BSNL is providing.
Need patience fellas, tomorrow hopefully we get the details on Docomo 3G. Then we can figure out everything.
