Microsoft was not able to slow the market share loss of its Internet Explorer (IE) web browser in December. IE surrendered more than 1.5 points in December, according to Net Applications, while Firefox, Chrome and Safari posted substantial gains.

Web developers's woes are slowly going away

I believe MS was pretty slow in getting IE8 out of the door. Am not taking credit away from FF, they showed the users a new world with the launch of FF1.

Things are again looking bright for the coming year - IE8, Opera 10, Safari 4

I presume the next version of FF would also be in works, though i doubt it would be released before the end of the year.

Another point to note is that many people skipped Vista, and were still using XP. Some of them would have upgraded to IE7, but quite a lot of them would have stuck with IE6. Even those who would have upgraded to IE7, would have been bereft of the benefits that protected mode gives you on a Vista or Windows 7 PC.

With Windows 7 looking like the next XP on the horizon, quite a lot of Non-IE users would be presented with a better version of IE with new security features. This should help IE garner some user share back.

Personally, i was a FF user for an year or so, switched to Opera, and then over to IE along with IE7Pro.

I hope the new FF comes with a proper UI and better memory management, i will install it then. IMHO, the UI of FF3 is hideous!

hehe lol i think IE has more market share coz its a standard browser that comes with windows (not many bother to google for FF etc) had it been like FF it would have very low share in market rofl...

FF3 has the most customizable interface.

All of the following is done in CSS without any themes with the default interface of FF3:

Toggle Toolbars/Sidebars, autohidden Toolbars/Sidebars, dynamic/smart bookmarks and glass on all toolbars.

IMHO. all other browsers are hideous.

Dude, no kidding, your FF looks superb. And i mean it.

But to point of the UI, you had to make it look like it. I have no clue how to edit the CSS stuff, and i doubt the normal user would. But if you could do this, then what was the FF team thinking providing us with that hideous UI by default?
Please guide me how i could make FF look like this and i will also install FF3 and start using it.

Frankly, its just my opinion, this look might be flashy but its still hideous:P

I prefer seeing less of my browser and more of my web pages..thats the best UI..;)

+1 to that :D

F11 works on all browsers :P

btw, the FF3 look on vista is quite good nowadays with the default strata theme. It is how you manage the extra stuff you install on FF3 which counts. If you are using FF3 on defaults, no use of FF at all. I have no theme installed on FF3 but about 70 extensions. So I had to strip the statusbar of useless icons too.

@partymonger:

people like me who are still stuck on a 15" crt have to go to great lengths to optimize every ui nowadays to suit their requirements. My first priority is to maximize the web page area too. the second is to maximize accessibilty and ease of use.

only two toolbars are visible at a time similar to IE7. The bookmarks and sidebar are autohidden (visible on hover) Rest of the toolbars can be toggled with a single click. The "Buttons" bar for instance is toggled by "Buttons". Tabs are switched by hover. (I kinda like it at the bottom) Minimal effort and maximal utilization of space.

some folks (free software developers blogs actually) are grumbling at mozilla's evil FF branding policies and the memory/performance issues of FF itself.

slowly webkit/KHTML engine is gaining favour not to mention chrome, if they don't mess it up, FF itself will have competition soon. although FF does have super strong mindshare today...

The main reason:

  • why Internet Explorer sucks, is because it does not follow standards and it is slow

I always, advise my friends to use any browser except IE even lynx:P

lets hope, if IE 8 Improves the situation;)
