Guys i got like 40 - 45 k to spend on a 2nd rig to server my central PC.

I won't be gaming on it, i'll be just using it as a processing unit and for some general computing. Need some advice and assurance.....

->Proc - E6600 will do(Quad core's are like 300 $ on newegg these days, which makes them affordable for me...does any1 know the indian market price in delhi? and is it worth buying in the first august week?)

->Mobo - something which can support atleast 6gb ram(what will be the best solution in the indian market if i get a quad?)

->Ram - I kinda wanted to stuff this with 4gb now, wid room for more later on and in the value range...since my work requires quantity > speed.I have seen many ppl on TE use Kingston & Transcend so i guess there performance should be quite gud...but which 1 should be preferred?

->Cabinet - Something with a lot of room, but not too expensive

->Cooling - What's the best cost effective thing i can get in delhi?

I got my friends old 19inch monitor, lan card, Speaker & SB!live platinum & a couple of 7300 gs frm ESWC (do they go into SLI?) so Cpu, Mobo & ram are my only concerns. And is buying a legit Vista worth it? And yes.........i got no internet exploration skills

well u can have the quads for roughly 15k , get a zebronics jamica server cabinet but u will have to order is from the main dealer and wait for a while ( 3.2k or so) thats cheap else you can look up at the cooler masters and chieftec cabinets from SMC but for a price.

if u want 6gb of ram or so i suggest you will have to pick up 2gb kits coz if u pick up 1gb then 4 slots u can have more than 4 gb ( buy from memory configurator) . cooling get the tl120 ex around 3k .

If you are rendering a lot of 3d or video, you may want to think about liquid cooling, there are some pretty good no-brainer cooling kits out there, like the Corsair Nautilus 500 External Water Cooling Kit.

Thks for the replays guys

Can't i get them in Delhi or India in general? I got my cellshock frm configurator but the customs nearly tore me apart even wid a 4 euro tag on the package. I would love to dodge that and get something locally.

NA i don't do too much intensive rendering. I am only a CG sculptor so need something which can generate preview renders wid texture and lighting or bake scenes widout killing my work momentum.

ya u can get it in india but will have to check up with prices. no idea as most dealers dont have it . and very rarely people buy. in btw there were some 2x2 gb kit sale in the market section you might be interested in.

a cg sculptor huh.... sorry then 7300 gs wont cut ... think in terms of 7900 or bigger .... the video card is the one in charge of your view ports and that department is the main thing for you .... higher polys = better gfx card :)... trust me you dont want your screen to freeze when you start using mudbox and take it to maya/max

Thks a million :)

I knw it will suck for maya or max....but the machine is only for rendering (its the 2nd rig), my primary rig has QuadroFx for all the visual stuff.

Since rendering is primarily dependent on Processors, the faster the processor, the better speeds you can get. I would recommend the E6600, just because its cost effective, and a low cost intel mobo. From my experience in a renderfarm, if the frame size is not much larger than Video - and not a highly complex scene, 2GB RAM has been sufficient. Obviously you are aware of the 4GB limit of XP, so if your OS is 32 bit, you will have to stick to 4 GB.

Last, the application also defines the render server configuration. If you are going to use SoftImage, the Gelato will do wonders, hence quadro is not a bad investment. but then for a pure render server, unless you plan to build a render farm over a period of time, that may not justify the cost.

you last points on cooling, smps and case. If you are going to overclock, i suggest you atleast buy a decent config. a couple of 2.4 OC'd to 3.0G would give you 20% decrease in rendertime.

Just for the record, My last benchmarks show the Q6600 OC'd to 3.0 beating the shit of a a dual opty 2218 configs. And that was depresssing, since i am a self confessed AMD fanboy. :-)
