All right so I've done a fair amount of reading. So far the two methods to root seem to be z4root and superoneclick.

z4root seems far simpler and the latest release (1.3.0) supports motorola defy. I downloaded it from here : [APP] z4root - xda-developers. I've downloaded the apk and installed it. But I'm still scared to hit the permanent root button :P.

If it helps: I bought the defy on letsbuy.com (no motoblur, FW 2.1). When I go to settings->about phone it says firmware version is 2.1-update1 and system version is moto_version.2.59.0.MB525.Retail.en.SEA15

After I root installing custom roms should be simple enough using rom manager, right? Or do I need to follow any complicated tutorials?

Thanks a lot in advance. :D

I would suggest Superoneclick. Z4root never worked for me, do not know about the latest version. For superoneclick, install the USB drivers, enable USB debugging, open the superoneclick.exe in your computer and click root. once its done, disable usb debugging and reboot. Never used ROM manager, so cant help you with that. I use RSD lite to flash the new ROMS, if you need any help with the same, let me know.

Z4Root does not work with the Moto DEFY .. only SuperOneClick will successfully root .. and don't worry its a safe process.

You're right, z4root doesn't work :(. I'm going to try superoneclick.

I've downloaded superoneclick v1.9.5. When I click the root button I get the following:

SuperOneClick v1.9.5.0

Nope.. Default setting is fine. I've done it.. Watch your defy's screen closely, so that you need to select a prompt. (I don't remember what that is). After you accept that, your device is rooted.. Try that again..

I switched to earlier version (1.6.5) and now my phone is rooted. Thanx!

Now I'm totally scratching my head over installing custom roms :(. There are so many tutorials and people throwing around terms like everybody knows 'em :(. We really need a "Hacking Defy for Dummies" (lol :D, fat chance). Guess I'm stuck!

Well, if you want Iphone like looks, go for MIUI.. I've never tried it, but heard its good.. I have CM7, and its awesome.. Waiting for the final version..

how successful is unrooting of defy & getting it back to square one..to the phone which i got out of the box with it's preinstalled android version?

I think if we have the stock ROM's sbf image, we can flash it fully and can claim warranty.. I downloaded them first and then tried rooting it.. Never tried it. But I'm pretty sure it'll work.. And BTW if we flash a new ROM, every trace of rooting the phone/2nd init installer would be gone... :)

Yea ... just reflash your stock ROM .. its like reformatting your PC .. no evidence of S/W tampering will be left.

No download and install Milestone Overclock and set it upto 1Ghz

Custom setting - 1000 Mhz at 56 vsels
