Laptops Immediate Help needed : Indian Customs

I am currently in singapore , I have bought a laptop (asus N 10 J ) to be precise for $950 singapore here.. i shall get about 80$ GST refund...

I want to send this laptop to my family via courier ? do custom rates apply ? any idea how much ?

as in.. If i book a courier will it reach my family or are customs guys going to create a mess..

My sister needs one urgently.. hence the hurry...

please reply ASAP..
 
custom rates would apply if you send it by courier..

the courier company would be able to help you with the exact rates

some amount would be exempt 5 or 10K if you show it as a gift or something like that.. i am not so sure though!
 
Fedex can help you. But you can save money by having it hand delivered/ carried by someone to India and ur family can collect it from them.

Customs are notorious anyways. Expect between 25-32% for customs as an overhead. Most cases the courier co. calls up the delivery address, mentioning the amount of exact money to be paid as customs.

At this point your family is left with no choice but to pay up whatever is said (you do get a written note of the amount) as the co. has already paid customs and cleared your cargo.

You will also need to include a declaration with a copy of the bill for customs valuation. Else they will value as per their whims which would always be on the higher side.
