I plan on importing two 2 tb hdds for myself through a friend who's in Bangkok/singapore now. will the warranties for the hdds from seagate/wd/hitachi if bought abroad be entertained here in India?

On Internal HDD's, there is no International Warranty.

However on External HDD's there is International Warranty in some cases. Ask the retailer in S'pore about International warranty on them. Also consider Samsung HDD if u are buying from abroad. I had a 2tb WD Elements - external HDD I got from Australia which became kaput after a year, RMAd in India later on.

#sunny27 , you can't avail the HDD warranties from india, you will have to avail it from there itself

I have bought WD Hard drives from SG and RMA'd them in India a couple of years ago. These were raptors

^^ Are you sure we can claim warranty for imported WD hdds in India? How much warranty is available on the WD black series? How much do Seagate XT hdds cost in India and if bouht abroad can the warranty be claimed in India? I desperately need 2 Tb hdds and now they are prohibitively expensive. I had the chance to pick them up cheap in late oct 2011 and I regret for missing that window of oppurtunity. Now with falling ddr3 ram prices I have stockpiled on ram,16gb for the desktop and 8 gb for the laptop with 4 gb and 2 gb kits lying around as spares.

WD Black retains its 5 yr warranty, AFAIK. Its the Greens and Blue series which have gotten a reduction.

As for the XT, I am pretty sure no. The warranty will not be honoured here.

@sunny27,

I am sure WD honors warranty on external HDD series and the high end raptor series is confirmed by bottle sir.

WD Black Caviar retains its 5 yr warranty, but the pricing differences are little. U can buy them in India itself.

You can get Samsung series too. Consider them, they are rated good too. But no warranty in India. Also get the HDD from S'pore. Its a lot easier afterwards.

I need some external HDD, I maybe going to Korea next month.. so do which drive do you guys think, I should go for ??

Samsung external or WD External ??

If WD, then which ones should I go for. Ideally 2TB will be good but if they are too expensive then I will go for 1 TB.

Any suggestions ??

I was able to successfully RMA my friend's WD 1 TB external hard disk which was purchased in SG. No additional steps were necessary, just had to create a normal RMA request online.

@ CA50 & moggab

I would say its a let down. WD has been plagued by problems in both internal and external products. Samsung internal HDD are renown and I personally have no idea on their External HDDs.

However it is of no use since Samsung ATM is not backed by service/ Warranty in India. Hope is around the corner since Seagate has bought it and will be offering their products too in near future in India.

Also WD products are priced high than the Samsung ones. Safer one ATM is WD only bcause they have reputed RMA service in India.

^ ya mate that what made be suggested WD. Even though their drives might be faulty, they comes will good warranty period (sadly not now
<
), and their RMA service is not too bad as well.

Is it better to go for My Book essential or My Book Live ??

What should be the expected price of these 2TB drives in india ??
