You know, they have gone too far as news publications have ran out of stock images.
 
It is not transportation cost alone, the plastic cable coating itself should be a crude oil refining by-product. Probably, the price increase is primarily due to that.
 
Even if the plastic cable is a byproduct of refinery, it still needs to move from the manufacturing zone to a market nearest to you. That involves transportation costs, primarily diesel or any fuel(hike is across all category of fossil fuel). They have to pass on this extra cost down to the last point, which is the end-user like you and me.
Offcourse cost of crude oil also matters, the end price is a culmination of all the factors which ensures the product reaches you.
 
For the record, crude oil price hit $120 in March but is trading between $95-100.
