Autodesk’s entire catalog is now free to students, faculty, and Autodesk Assistance Program participants. This is undoubtedly good news to anyone wanting to enter the engineering, digital media, content creation, or any other number of fields that use Autodesk’s products.

Students weren't going to buy their softwares anyway & would resort to pirating them due to high licensing costs of autocad. I guess they figured why not give it for free and get generate some nice PR. Smart move!

Well, there's far less piracy in the foreign countries and students do actually buy the software. A Mechanical Engineer friend of mine in US had to pay for the software because everyone in his class did. Also, this is free for both students and educators which means that institutes which earlier had to buy the software (mostly 1-tier institutes) wouldn't have to, now. The cost that was bore by the institutes and passed on indirectly to the students will no more be there.

I would say this is an excellent move by Autodesk and I really appreciate their effort! Will they generate good PR? Yes, and it's not just a smart move but very generous one too. :)

No, institutes still have to pay for it

relevant line from the article:

Licensing prohibits use in classroom or lab use for instructional purposes

its not just PR , it also ties up students knowledge to this particular software which then generates sales when he joins the offices
