Indian Engineers Aiming for $10 Laptop

Engineers in India are looking into ways to create a laptop that would cost a mere $10. The effort came in response to the increasing price of the so-called '$100 laptop.'

The Indian government has taken a pass on the device, opting instead for two homegrown designs. One is from a student in one of the country's technology schools, while the other was produced by the Institute of Science, a graduate school in Bangalore.

Neither device has been able to get the price down to that $10 threshold, but has gotten as close as $47. The government so far has not gotten any company to agree to produce the device, as building it for only $10 would likely mean the manufacturer would have to take a significant loss.

Many of the parts that would be needed must be produced elsewhere, which incurs additional costs, those close to the project said. To save money, some parts may be produced within the country rather than elsewhere.

Any actual device is likely still at least two years away from becoming a reality. A meeting has been scheduled for later in May to discuss the project. On the other hand, the OLPC project will start shipping actual laptops later this year.

Where are the details of the actual thing?? And how is it that someone in IISc is making it and I didnt know about it? Damn must have been a real secretive project. I know that my dept makes the Simputer, wondering if they are gonna make the $10 laptop too.

Raghu.

Sounds like a dream really. I want to see this come true though. The day should come when comps replace books.

err ... a 10 dollar laptop seems highly unplausible ... 10 dollars ..that is assume 500 rs in indian currency... so a flash storage , video screen , plastic casing , curcuitry , err... take a second guess .. sounething around 5000-6000 is still achieveable what what i could believe .

$10 laptops, achievable when 1Rs=50$... anyway, the question is, would it be powerful enough to do all the tasks we do on 20k computer. ppl usually go for the latest and powerful models.

This isn't being made for the people you are talking about (read: "you").

And this is bogus as can be. They'll make an el cheapo digital diary and claim it is a computer.

probably this will have those 6-segment display like calculators ... :bleh:

So many times have we heard that there is something revolutionary being done here. However sure as ever that never really comes out. Definitely not before it becomes prominent everywhere else.

Henhh??? wat does that mean? You want the laptop to cost 20 paisa? And btw these laptops were never meant to compete with the desktops... they are aimed at a completely different demograph i.e. cheap computing for the masses and to get the rural and mainly the people living on the fringes of society to get tech savvy. It's a wonderfull thought no doubt but very unlikely to become a reality... I mean c'mon $10? Lets get real here.

The indian government should concentrate providing supply of electricty in villages first rather than wasting money on all this. What they will run this computer on gobar gas. :S

hmm, I believe CDAC pulled PARAM super computer, didn't they ?, doesn't matter if it isn't used elsewhere, we proved we could do it. Wasn't it Govt. Of India initiative ?.

I'm damn sure we can bring it out, tho i wouldn't prefer el cheapo digital diary / kids computer badged as the real thing.
