That website is a complete rip-off of Amazon. In fact Engadget made a lot of fun of it in their "Keepin' It Real Fake" section.

The Infibeam Pi - An Indian version of the Kindle - To buy or not to..?

Just checked the home page of infibeam.com, which mentions that preorders are open for the Infibeam Pi - an ebook reader based on e-Ink display, very much similar to the Amazon Kindle. This one has a 6" display, and is supposed to come with an accelerometer too.

This thing is sweetly priced at 9999 INR. Whether it is reliable, and worth it, is a question that I don't know the answer to. Pre-orders are currently open, and shipping starts 22nd Feb.

Given the fact that I am waiting for a decent and cheap ebook reader for quite a few months, I am tempted with this offering. Does anyone have any other info about the same..? Is it worth buying one at this price..?

Re: The Infibeam Pi - An Indian version of the Kindle - To buy or not to..?

how do you search for a book in it if it does not have any input options?

It might be sourced from a cheap chinese vendor (the type that make cheap knockoff's of branded ones) . i'd stay away.

Re: The Infibeam Pi - An Indian version of the Kindle - To buy or not to..?

Never heard of infibeam. Warranty seems to be 1 year...hmm.

Also their website seems to be an amazon.com ripoff. Looks like a copy of amazon website, logos, layout - everything.

Re: The Infibeam Pi - An Indian version of the Kindle - To buy or not to..?

The 3mm audio connector is a typo or does it really use a non-standard proprietary connector?

Re: The Infibeam Pi - An Indian version of the Kindle - To buy or not to..?

Regarding the Amazon like look, this is what the official response looks like:

The Official InfiBeam Blog: The Uniqueness Argument

Looking at the lineup for this year's release of ebook readers from Samsung, Asus, and the likes, it should would be worth waiting a little longer. But whether anyone will offer something in this price range is not known. Though there are rumours that the Asus 9" reader will be priced sub 200$, we do not know reliably. That is where the Pi looks to score at.

Re: The Infibeam Pi - An Indian version of the Kindle - To buy or not to..?

I am itching to get my hands on one.requirements are atleast a 9inch screen, good battery life and support for epub format. It should support .chm format.
my suggestion is wait.asus, msi are bringing out their ebook readers.now that apple has launched its ipad for about 489usd others will get into the game lowering the price lower.
so wait.
10k looks reasonable.

the question to be asked is how long to wait?.
is 6 inch screen good enough to read or is it too small.I know we can change the font and all but then you do lose the continuity of the page.

suggestions please.

Re: The Infibeam Pi - An Indian version of the Kindle - To buy or not to..?

^^ In the same boat here. Anyways, after seeing the Asus D950 pics, and its rumoured price tag of less than 200$, I have decided to wait. 2010 is truly the year of the ebook readers, and there is a long list of gadgets waiting to be released, which will most probably lead to price wars.

Asus ebook reader images begin to hit the web

Re: The Infibeam Pi - An Indian version of the Kindle - To buy or not to..?

Is it possible the OEM is the same for both Pi & Kindle ?

Re: The Infibeam Pi - An Indian version of the Kindle - To buy or not to..?

its best to wait for the e-reader competition to reach india.i think it will take about a year.

i don't think so. the kindle has a qwerty keyboard and no sd card slot. the kindle screen has 16 shades of gray compared to the 8 mentioned above for this one.

Re: The Infibeam Pi - An Indian version of the Kindle - To buy or not to..?

I had posted a link to this Infibeam Pi a week back...
Its made by some NRI who returned to India, based in ahemdabad...some article in Pune Economic times last week.

This one ? (hit refresh repeatedly if it does not come up) otherwise use this

Nice background, hope it does well :)

Re: The Infibeam Pi - An Indian version of the Kindle - To buy or not to..?

The electronics used is these devices are nothing spectacular and they don't need to be.The only important thing is the 6" screen which they claim is vizplex e-ink which is the latest and also used by amazon so I guess they are at par with amazon.
They don't have 3g and the books collection from amazon is certainly much bigger but if 3g is not that important, and you won't be able to use it immediately in India in most places any way, then definitely go for it.
It supports epub which is the standard at the sony book store so the gap isn't that wide and you'd be able to get the latest books easily albeit at a slightly higher price.
