Sify has recently changed its plans and they are offering 256Kbps from 10pm to 8am unlimited pack for 545. I enquired abt data caps and all... the guy told that data cap will be applicable only for day packs and not for night packs... is anyone using this?? what abt the speed?? and do they block any ports?? I require the ports used by P2Ps and Torrents...

lol......

I would advise you to run away from Sify if they approach you. Don't touch them even with a loooong stick.

See the fineprint. They say 256kbps shared. In that case, you may not get even 64 coz everyone will be using the net at the night to make use of the foffer.

Of course, I could be wrong. but I would never touch sify. I have heard too many horror stories abt it....

The title would be better if it is : Info on Sify BADBAND and not broadband coz' Sify dunno what u mean by BROAD band.

well, I opted for the 128kbps plan. solely because there weren't any other options. no Reliance/Hathway/iquara/etc in my area. (nibm, pune). contacted BSNL atleast 10 times but got no response. plus they have a cap of 1Gb.

my current plan is for 400/- a month. got it just this month (3 weeks). it is from 9pm-9am. till now no downtimes for me. I get an average of 14-16kbps download speed in azureus/wellget. browsing is fast and there are no problems till date. (touch wood :) )

I have two PCs using this connection (ICS). hope things go smoothly from here on... ;)

PS: in 3 weeks downloaded about 6Gb.

^^ thats the night plan only. unltd downloads but between 9pm n 9am only.. on the regular monthly unltd plans (starting with 48Kbps @ Rs.450 a month) u get good speeds but there is a sorta download limit. I have that plan and till 75MB download the speed is 10KBps. Once that speed is exceeded, the download speed drops to 2.5KBps.. which soo sux..

As for me, I have had very bad experience with SIfy but that is mainly due to the incompetent cable operator they have given Sify Franchisee to. his service soooo sux.. In the last 9 months of having Sify Broadband, i have not had connection for a period of 3 months already :(.. that pathetic the cable operator's service is..

yes you are right. if your cable wallah sucks, then you are going to face problems.
I too had a bad time when the cable wallah was setting up the cable. really uncouth fellows.

yes its night time unlimited. but thats the only time i get to access net. (after returning from work). so it works out fine for me. but the download speed remains somewhere near 11-17kbps all through the download.

day time plans do have caps of 150Mb per day. i'm happy with the speeds that i'm getting at the moment. (TW ;))

The reason i went for sify is that there isnt any other ISP in my area(Medavakkam in chennai). Only Sify and BSNL... since we are bachlors staying together in a rented house no chance of getting BSNL... So without options i am going to Sify... The connection is good as far as i asked people in my area... I am hughly concerned abt downloads... i have confirmed with the provider and he has told that there wudnt be any cap of dloads...

But does sify block any ports... Read online that sify blocks the port used to access usenet News Groups... Are they blocking any other ports?? I would use p2p and torrents so their ports should not be blocked...

SpitefulPentium does sify block any other ports other than the one for usenet Newsgroups??

nope. ports are not blocked here. dont know about your place. but definitely not blocked here. :D 6881-6890 for Azureus is working fine. Ares is working fine too.

If its the only option left, then its sify, internet is internet and you can't do it witout an ISP, and sify is like the worst isp in the world, but atleast it opens up pages in internet explorer.

Sify is good enuf for mee....i pay for a 48 kbps connection, but i get speed of 128 kbps...no bad experiences so far(except rains of course)...all ports open, no caps AFAIK (even if there is one...it doesnt seem to be working, cuz i cross 100mb daily without any change in the speed)

hey mask, I thot that ur cable operator was ur buddy.
anyway, download limits apply during the day.
Sufy has cleared their plans up and now there are no hidden terms (that we know/do not know of). The major thing is that it all depends on the service providedby local cable op. If he is good (ask neighbours about downtimes, especially ones that occur at night) then go for it.
Port blocking is again mostly done at cable operators place, but u can always change the port settings in ur p2p clients. BT may take some work even after opening the ports (something with their proxy) so try using bitcomet and azureus which have the highest probability of working

unfortunately he is.. :(

now thts 2 experiences why i had my earlier siggy..

Eh? what does that mean? You can't expect me to remember ur siggy since u guys change it everyday.
Now look at me, I am a one siggy guy (same one for a looong time) unlike you, who once asked me what to do in case he had a chance to sleep with two (girls) at one time. Of course I did shoot down ur flight of fancy then....
