I run a P4 2.7Ghz on an Intel 915. Everything was running fine, but the CPU temperature was wandering around 65-78C of late. So, i was about to replace the thermal paste soon.

Yesterday, while working on the PC, the system restarted by itself. I thought it was due to over heating. But the monitor's power LED turned green for 3 seconds and went back to orange. Now, when i start the PC, the same thing happens. No display, LED is green for 3 seconds and goes back to orange. But, if i disconnect the cable from the CPU, and switch on the monitor, it turns on. If the connector is plugged into the CPU, it acts like it was put in standby, irrespective of the CPU being turned on or off.

Please help me people :huh:

Its not the fault of ur monitor. :)

Maybe the method of application of the thermal paste had some flaws; :(
Must be a typical case of overheating;

In this case, the single short beep should not be heard I guess. Or are u able to hear that?? :huh:

What thermal paste did u apply???

You are right! No beep when starting up.

About the thermal paste, i have not applied it yet. I was about to in the next couple of days, but this happened.

What does the 'no beep' signify?

If u r using your onboard VGA then there are high chances that your onboard VGA is dead or in the worst case senario your mobo... To chk install a PCI graphics card on your mobo and then try booting the comp... I am sure that while uninstalling/installing your HSF your must have damaged the mobo... The system should boot even if u havent applied thermal paste...
