Install new HDD then what?

I just installed a new HDD for my Toshiba Satellite A105. Original one crapped out. Now I have turned on the power and after the Toshiba startup display the screen goes blank and all I see is a blinking cursor in the top left corner. I have tried the F2 and F12 on startup but what I see is all Greek to me. Can't find anything on the net to guide me nor is there anything about this in my owners manual.

Anyone able to guide me thru this probably basic thing to get my laptop running again?

1)After pressing F2/F12 /Delete you should be able to enter the BIOS menu.First check if your newly installed HDD is detected in the storage option.

2)In BIOS there will be option related to " Boot " and boot order /boot preference .You need select your CD/DVD drive as the first boot device.

3)Save the settings and restart.

4)Keep your windows XP/7 installation disc inserted in the CD/DVD drive.(make sure your windows installation disc is bootable)

5)After the restart , you will see a message " Press any key to boot from CD " or it might automatically boot from the CD.

6)With this your windows installation starts, follow the on-screen instructions to install windows. Create a partition before installing using the utility in Windows 7 setup or incase of XP also it will show your new HDD as unallocated space, you will have to enter the value in MB to create a new partition.

Hope this helps :).

Re: Install new HDD then what?

did you install OS on it? how is a system supposed to boot without any OS like Windows or Linux?

Grab the setup disc of your favorite os and boot through the disc
