installing Hypervisor on Dell Latitude

Hi,

I hv a Latitude e6510 with Core i7 Win 7 prof and ubuntu Maverick installed. Now I want to move both the OS to a virtualized environ.
I am doing so to install and try win 8 trial version.

So I plan to download Xen Hypervisor (Welcome to xen.org, home of the Xen® hypervisor, the powerful open source industry standard for virtualization.) for this.

Can anyone suggest what all I need to do?
like I need to take the image of HDD etc...

What are my chances of getting this thru and successful implement this?

Ram

Windows 8 wont work on Xen, the only thing i've tried windows 8 was on Vmware Workstation 8

If you chose to use vmware then you can try Vmware Converter which will convert your physical machine to Virtual.

aasimenator,

Thnkx for the insight I downloaded the convertor from VMware it is free. After installation it is trying to take the image of the entire HDD like 500GB, Can I restrict this to only what exactly installed? free space is included, I do not want the freespace to be part of the image.

bcos I do not hv that big space for the image?

also I need to know any other Hyper -v which is open source
to put this image

I am not sure which version you have downloaded, may be its the 5.0. I haven't used VMware Converter for a while now.. but when i did use it & imported a Machine for converting... in "Source Data" there was a little drop down menu which had a selection of what size you want the partition to be... there was a Minimum Size (best option), a Maintain Size which would select the whole disk/ partition. may be another one i don't remember..

But if you see that option... please chose Minimum Size....

Don't quite get this part, what do you mean by open source, VMware will also allow you to open Hyper V VHD's, not exactly sure if Hyper V will allow you to load VMware VM's

aasimenator,

I got that thnkx anyway. I can limit the size and choose particular directories too....

Tommy,

I meant to say that I was not sure abt vmplayer running on bare metal, may be you can give some info on this.

Since this is not for commercial use I need this for my own use. That is the reason I referred to open source.

But I found vmplayer is free of cost to download and install. But not sure this has hyper v.

In xen.org it is open source and it has hyper v.

Since my hardware supports all the latest VM terms I was trying to get the hyper v also.

In windows hyper v is available only Win 2008 R2 and I cannot buy that.

Anyway thnx for valuable inputs.

One more Q How is Norton AV is going to work?

Some information

Windows 2008 R2 Hypervisor is a Hypervisor, you will need another machine to connect and load VM's on it, you cannot work on that machine
VMware vSphere is also similar to it, you cannot work on that machine, you will need a different machine to connect and load VM's on it

Hope this helps, VMware Workstation or Player is a better option as you can run multiple VM's within it without having to run a Hypervisor. You can install Windows Server 2008 R2 and then install the Hyper V Role but there will be lot of drawbacks as the machine would be a Server machine and has lot of features disabled, even after enabling them the performance is not as good as a Desktop

VMware vSphere Hypervisorâ„¢ (ESXi)
Microsoft® Hyper-V™ Server 2008 R2

^ I agree with tommy_vercetti on this.... you'll need a different machine, even if its a laptop to connect to it and use it.... if you don't want to use another machine you can only use Applications like VMware Player (Free), VMware Workstation (Paid), VirtualBox (Free), Parallels Desktop (Paid) etc..

And if you do want to use another machine to connect to your hypervisor i'll suggest you forget EVERYTHING else and go for VMware ESXi 5 (Free), Install its VSphere Client on another machine and manage it.

No..there is another solution. you can install Windows 2008 OS fully and add HyperV role into it. so you can have desktop and everything and at the same time another VM can be running. may be Win8.

i have similar solution working for me. however i have not installed win8 on it. give a shot.

Oracle Virtual box is also free and the developer preview works like a charm on it.

For converting a physical machine to a VHD, you can also try Sysinternals disk2vhd again free.
