Hey guys, this is my first guide on te, so correct me if anything in this article is wrong :P

Warning : Do not attempt this if you do not want to void your warranty and support!

Anyways as the title says, its abt flashing ur stock firmware of a WRT54GL router from the original to a moded firmware which adds more features to ur router making it more feature-rich. I got this router about one month back from one of the distributors in bombay from lamington road @ 3500. You guys can pm me for the contact details, if u need one for yourself. The main reason f or flashing the HyperWRT firmware is the features, the normal routers available in the market dont provide all these features like qos, adjustable transmit power etc. There are two more firmwares available for the WRT54GL i.e. OpenWRT & DD-WRT, but personally i have used DD-WRT, which turned out to be very problematic and was not very stable, so HyperWRT seems to be the better choice amongst the 3. Apparently in the market there are 2 versions of the routers available i.e. WRT54GL & WRT54G which is the V5 revised hardware model. The letter *L* stands for linux in the WRT54GL model. The difference between the V5 & GL routers is that V5 has less memory compared to the GL versions, which is why its more cheaper compared to the GL counterpart. Coming to the features of the HyperWRT firmware :

* Adjustable Transmit Power

* Antenna Select

* 13 Wireless Channels

* 'Boot Wait' flash protection

* Increased Port Forwarding & Triggering Fields

* Increased Qos Device & Application Fields

* Increased Access Restrictions Policies & Blocked Services Fields

* Command Shell

* Telnet Daemon

* Startup & Firewall Scripts

* Uptime

* Reboot Button

* Hidden features in the Linksys firmware

Downloading the firmware :

http://www.thibor.co.uk/files/firmware/Hyperwrt_G_Thibor15c.zip

(This is to upgrade from the stock linksys firmware, and it is specifically meant for the WRT54GL routers with the serial no : CL7A-CL7B.

Installing the firmware :

To install HyperWRT, follow these steps :

(Make sure u do a reset of ur router to the defaults, so that the nvram is cleared, u need to hold the reset button which is located at the back of the router for 30 seconds. Because not erasing the NVRAM and restoring the defaults can cause many odd and unreproducable issues and would end up bricking up ur router)
1. Download and unzip HyperWRT.

2. Goto http://192.168.1.1/ and enter your username/password (default is admin/admin).

3. Goto "Administration -> Firmware Upgrade", browse to HyperWRT and flash it.

4. Do NOT interrupt the flashing process and patiently wait until the router has rebooted.

5. (Optional Step) Goto "Administration -> Factory Defaults" and Restore Factory Defaults.

6. You now should notice an increase in Wireless Range and Performance. See the manual on this site for info on the added features.

And ofcourse if this firmware is upgraded successfully u can enjoy all the good features of this amazing firmware. I can now play quake 3 with heavy bittorrent usage and my downloads simultaneously on.

Here are some screenshots of the firmware :

And last of all, if luck was not on your side and somehow if you have bricked ur router by not following the instructions properly you will have to follow this guide to de-brick ur router :

Linksysinfo - The WRT54G Revival Guide.

Hope u guys like this guide. :hap2: :hap2:

good post bro i still wonder how many peeps got around to settin up wifi networks :D

or actually those that need one:P

^^ Nope i dont think so WRT54GC cannot be flashed because it has 1MB flash, 4MB RAM and uses the Marvell chipset. There aren't any alternative firmwares available for it.
