installing operating system on portable hard disk

Is it safe to install OS on a portable HDD.How will be the performance.

I am looking to install Window 7 and use the Portable HDD with my Desktop and Laptop.

On wihich port USB,IEEE 1394 or E-SATA?

You'll need an external drive with an E-SATA or SATA interface for best results with Windows 7.

WinXP can be installed onto an external drive as well.

I don't think USB 2.0 will be a good option, you won't get better performance:hap5: speed will less in USB but if you have any E-SATA Port that will make a difference from USB and speed will be all most like your internal HDD I did this experiment in Windows Xp pro sp3 but can't say about WIndows 7
