Installing OS on pc without cd/usb drive

I've got an old Athlon tbird + A7V mobo on which all the usb ports have stopped working and only one ide channel is active(hdd detected properly); i.e I can only connect one device either as master or slave in primary channel only. I don't have a fdd with me either.

Is there a way to load an OS into it?

I had tried installing XP on a separate pc and then putting the hdd into the old PC but it hangs after loading the initial files(in safe mode as well as normal).

Suggest any suitable linux distro or other option to install a basic OS into the PC.

Config: Athlon Tbird 1.1ghz, ASUS A7V, 256mb sdram, Geforce 2 MX 200 agp, 80gb wdc ide hdd, PCI sound card

If you are able to load in safe mode with just command prompt with your method of diff m/c, then probably you can copy the xp cd to the hdd and then start the OS installation again from safe mode command prompt. Not the sharpest idea, but worth if you can get atleast the safe mode command prompt with no networking working.

As I said the old pc doesn't load in safe mode either; it loads the initial .sys files and then hangs. If I select any other option then it hangs in that screen itself. Basically looking for a lightweight but good linux distro that can be installed from other pc to see if that works atm.
