Intel Accelerating Ivy Bridge Unveiling to Computex 2011 | techPowerUp

Intel is preparing to unveil its next-generation processors based on the Ivy Bridge architecture as early as by Computex 2011 (May 30 to June 4), according to Commercial Times, a Chinese language business newspaper. Ivy Bridge is an optical shrink of the Sandy Bridge architecture, processors based on it will be manufactured on the 22 nanometer silicon fabrication process. Intel launched its Sandy Bridge 32 nm processors at CES 2011, in January. In related news from the same source, AMD has also accelerated the production of its Llano APUs and is expected to begin shipping the APUs to ODM/OEM makers in May at the earliest instead of the original schedule set in the third quarter.

I havn't even got a load of 32nm, and sandy bridge just released. So is it time already???(atleast they aren't using a new socket)

things are looking like Bulldozer is good, may be better

its lame IMO, with SNB down till March-end, and then you show people that a newer chip is so near (not that its launching in June, but still...couldnt they wait till IDF) Most likely they are showing that, OK we goofed up but that doesnt mean we are lazy. Investor alert ?

Yeah. Intel is going too high. I think we shouldn't buy a INTEL CPU atleast 3-4 months after launch. Who knows, the next day they announce that they will release next generation next month!

I dont think they've pulled the roadmap forward though, 22nm is still scheduled for end Q4. They may be showing it off at Computex just so AMD dosent steal all the press with Fusion/Bulldozer

Btw back in 2007, they showed off a working 45nm chip in Feb/March which was a good 7-8 months ahead of the November launch

Intel

In general-purpose applications Ivy Bridge micro-architecture-based chips will boost performance by around 20% compared to Core i-series “Sandy Bridge” products; performance of integrated graphics core of Ivy Bridge will get 30% higher compared to the graphics engine of the latest microprocessors

I don't really think so. Core i7 920 released in 2008, mid or perhaps Q1/Q2 or so and it is good enough for 2011 end or even parts of 2012 for most games. So that is a life of 3+ years. And even the fastest CPU today isn't all that faster at stock. If you include Core i7 960 or 875k, then they aren't even upgrades from the 920. You get noticeable difference only with a Core i7 2500k oced or 980X oced or so, and even then these aren't required in pretty much any game and the difference is only theoritical because it may not reflect in real time gameplay after 60 fps.

I am only talking with respect to gaming that is.

For other regular day to day stuff, I guess any core i5 or i7 is enough.

3D rendering etc, I have no idea about!

^ When Nehalem Core i7 was released... development on significantly better cpus and more cores stopped.

INTEL had hit a jackpot, AMD still can't compete on performance.

That's why we still have QUAD CORES priced from INTEL at 199$ since 2007(Q6600 price was later dropped). Since 2007, it's been quad cores(hex cores are a kidney or two away)

Bit of a late reply but i think the increase in graphics performance will be more than 30%. They are moving increasing the number of EU's from 12 to 16. Thats a 33% increase right there (dont know about TMU's or ROP's though). It will also be DX11 compliant so maybe the EU's will be beefed up a bit. Also with 22nm we should see maybe 20% better clocks. Im thinking the increase in performance has to be at least 50%

In what has been the most welcome news from Intel’s camp for a while now, they’ve apparently announced that the upcoming generation of 22nm processors, codenamed Ivy Bridge, will be backwards compatible with the Socket 1155 motherboards that the current Sandy Bridge processors use.
