Intel Announces Xeon Phi - PCIe Card Supercomputer Offering Teraflop Performance

Intel has announced a new range of “Many Integrated Core Architecture” chips called Intel Xeon Phi , these will be heading towards workstations ,data centers and even supercomputers . The new coprocessors are codenamed "Knights Corner " . These chips will be build upon existing Xeon architecture but designed to run highly parallel applications which will utilize the large number of cores and threads .

The 22nm Xeon Phi comes as a PCI-e card form and packs more than 50 cores and at least 8GB of GDDR5 RAM . . It has 512b wide SIMD support – allowing for multiple elements to be worked on in a single instruction – and Intel claims it’s good for more than 1 TeraFLOPs per node.

The chips are expected to go into production by end of 2012 . Intel has announced that 44 companies like Cray, HP , Dell , IBM etc have already signed up to use Xeon Phi .
