As media tablets and smartphones are on-track to outsell personal computers in the coming years, the significance of x86 processors, exclusively designed and made by Advanced Micro Devices and Intel Corp., is getting lower. As a result, long-rumoured Intel’s wish to buyout its only rival is getting more realistic, according to a source in the financial community. Due to the renewed acquisition rumour and AMD’s gains in consoles and low-power computers, stock of the company is growing.

The article mentions that as x86 processors have competition from ARM the acquisition could be approved as Intel wouldn't have a monopoly on the processor market even if it was the only x86 manufacturer.
And don't forget about Via. They still make x86 processors.
 
Not only x86, but the graphics market too. FTC will typically not approve a 80+ market share company buying any smaller competitor.

This would be detrimental for the market and customers. Regulatory bodies in USA and EU will definitely not allow this to happen.
