CPU/Mobo Intel on-CPU graphics still pants

Faster than GMA X4500HD, slower than GF9300
OCworkbench has come across an interesting chart, comparing graphics performance of Intel's G4x series chipsets and Nvidia's GeForce 9300 to Intel's new CPUs with onboard graphics

The test pitted an E6550 on G41, G45 and GF 9300 boards against a similarly clocked Pentium G6950 on an H55 board. In 3DMark06 the GMA X4500 scores 1085, GMA X4500HD gets 1169 and the GF 9300 scores 1869. The new Intel graphics core manages 1560, which is plenty compared to previous Intel IGPs, but still not enough to outpace Nvidia.

However, bear in mind that the Pentium G6950's graphics core runs at 533MHz and Intel plans much faster iterations, with 700MHz clocks and faster. They could match GF 9300 performance, but this is still nothing to write home about, as GF 9300 has been around for quite a while.

In any case, less demanding consumers don't need much more anyway

But we must remember that the PentiumG has the lowest GPU clock speed with 5xxMHz and the other core i-3's have 7xxMHz GPU clock speed. So if the core i-3's come within 5-10% of the 9300 then that itself could be termed as a major step forward for intel i guess.

The Core i-3's have a respectable TDP of 73w compared to the C2D's 65w TDP. So i guess 8w increase in TDP with a IGP is acceptable but have to wait for complete tests to really judge the true extent of increased consumption.

A foolish question:
Will the vga cable be inserted in the proccy? As the igp is on the proccy!
This got me thinking :p

^ Yeh... also you'll have to insert sound cables in the proccy unless you're using HDMI cable. The Proccy will come with all the jacks and sockets installed so you can insert all these cables. This will make back connectors on motherboard obsolete.

Some real world numbers of these new i3 chips ( including full speed 733Mhz GMA gaming scores ) : Core i3 + H55 V.S. AthlonII X3 + 785G

Overall, I still dont see why anyone looking to build low end system without investing in GPU will buy these i3 and H55 combos when good old x3 is cheaper to build, already available and has better graphics and overall performance.

It seems you will need an Intel H5x chipset to run processors with on die GPU's. Or else the ondie GPU won't function. And this chipset does not seem to support CrossFireX. So intel is basically trying to STILL force you to buy whats effectively a chipset just for graphics.

But the only place where this can truly shine is laptops.
